James Martin Makes The Connection

Raising Kaine's own "front pager" James Martin is featured in the current issue of The Connection newspapers.  I particularly liked this part of the interview:

What campaigns have you worked on? What has been your best moment so far in those campaigns?

I've worked on all sorts of campaigns from Jim Webb for Senate to a number of local and state races. The most profound experience I ever had was on primary night in 2006 when Jim Webb won the Democratic Primary. In just a couple months Jim Webb had gone from a political unknown to the Democratic Nominee for Senate. The second best moment was on Election Night 2006 when that same political unknown retired George Allen, the Republican favorite for President and a 20 year Virginia political veteran.

Yeah, those were amazing nights, no doubt...and James definitely played a significant part in making them happen.  Anyway, check out the entire interview here.

P.S. James, you're making me feel really old -- according to the interview, your first political memory was the 2000 presidential race; mine was Richard Nixon's resignation speech! :)

I'm becoming a fan of James (JohnBruhns - 3/4/2008 4:19:10 PM)
James Martin is a very bright young man who should continue his endeavors in progressive politics -- the day may come when we will call on him for leadership.

My first political memory (Chris Guy - 3/4/2008 4:39:18 PM)
is the '84 presidential race. My mother was the only person I knew of who was voting for Mondale.

My first political memory (Hugo Estrada - 3/4/2008 5:06:36 PM)
Rooting for Ronald Reagan on the evening news, while he talked about expanding the military...

Okay, so it is not a great progressive come-to-age story. But give me a break! I was under 8 :P

Mine was Carter in 80 (FxbAmy - 3/4/2008 6:55:47 PM)
I remember my parents having the "vote the party not the man" discussion at the dinner table. I liked Pres Carter because his daughter and I shared a name. Again, what do you want from an 8 year old.

I bet I know what my son's is going to be- in 06 he got in a fight with another 3rd grader on the bus because he loved Jim Webb. Started my Fighting Dem early!

Oh why not? (Shenandoah Democrat - 3/4/2008 5:17:15 PM)
My first political moment was the election and inauguration of John Kennedy. Before that I remember our Republican neighbors in Westchester County New York not letting their kids play with me and my brothers because our parents actively supported Adlai Stevenson and "thus we must be Communists"...how those rethugs always seem to find the slime!!

Nice Work, James! (buzzbolt - 3/4/2008 5:30:44 PM)
Just had to throw my memory in and I even remembered how to do the html--I think. . . . .

watching the 1964 (hereinva - 3/4/2008 5:47:13 PM)
Republican Convention with my dad. Looked like fun..balloons, confetti, hats, lots of wild cheering..and of course, Goldwater. Didn't have a clue what was going on but it was entertaining.

Lowell, you make me feel old (teacherken - 3/4/2008 6:11:25 PM)
and James makes me feel positively ancient.

I can remember my kindergarten teacher talking about President Truman.   And my first tv memories are the Army-McCarthy hearings and Edward R Murrow

Ken, you make me feel young :) (aznew - 3/4/2008 6:23:09 PM)
I remember cutting school in 6th grade to go to an anti-war (Vietnam) rally.

Old? (Waldo Jaquith - 3/4/2008 8:08:09 PM)
That's not old; my first political memory is the assassination of Garfield!

Reagan (proudvadem - 3/5/2008 5:54:02 PM)
I remember being the only kid in school that liked Carter!
But then again, I was had only been in VA for 2 years (I'm originally from Massachusetts!)
