Perriello Secures Democratic Nomination in Bid Against GoodeMarch 4, 2008-Ivy, VA-With all other challengers having withdrawn from the race by the appointed deadline, Tom Perriello secured the Democratic nomination to run against Virgil Goode for Congress in Virginia's fifth congressional district. Perriello has already broken numerous fundraising records in challenging Rep. Goode. In response to his momentum and support throughout the district, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has moved the race from "safe Republican" to "in play" status.
"The people of our district want leaders who share their values and will fight day and night to create good-paying jobs, make sure every family has access to a doctor, and get America's national security back on course," said Perriello. "I'm thrilled to lock up the nomination this early and to see such an overwhelming response from Democrats, Republicans and Independents to our positive agenda for moving our communities forward together."
"We're excited about the district-wide momentum around Tom Perriello's campaign, and we are eager to unite our party around him," said Fred Hudson, chairman of the Fifth Congressional District Democratic Committee. "He is already mounting a campaign the likes of which Virgil Goode has not seen, and we look forward to working with him to build on the national Democratic enthusiasm to bring new representation to this district in November."
The Perriello campaign has already opened offices in Franklin County and Charlottesville and will be opening an office in Danville shortly. They have logged over 1300 volunteer hours across the district. Perriello's last remaining challenger withdrew from the race in January. No other challengers had filed by Monday's filing deadline.
