Rep. Jo Ann Davis has switched assignments to lead a key House Intelligence subcommittee whose former chairman resigned amid bribery charges.Davis, R-1st, is the new chairman of the House subcommittee on terrorism, human intelligence, analysis and counterintelligence. She was named by House Intelligence Chairman Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich.
The chairmanship was vacated by the resignation of Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif. He pleaded guilty to criminal charges in California and acknowledged taking $2.4 million in bribes.
So, I wonder if she'll start gathering intel on Christmas haters? Just kidding.
Davis said yesterday that the United States has let its human-intelligence capabilities decline over the past 12 to 15 years. Her goals are to increase the number of agents in the field and improve counterintelligence, she said.
Interesting. Hasn't her party been in control of Congress for most of those 12 to 15 years?
And for the most "no duh" statement of 2005:
When asked her reaction to disclosures of a secret domestic-surveillance program under President Bush, Davis said she did not know enough to determine for herself whether the president acted with legal authority."If he does [have legal authority], it's fine," Davis said in a phone interview. "If he does not, I would have a problem." Bush said yesterday he acted legally.
What a legal scholar! Way to go out on a limb there, Jo Ann! I guess it's easier to talk strongly about candy canes and Christmas trees than the illegal intel activities of the administration. Maybe you should've angled for that Tooth Fairy Committee after all.
