Business Loses a Bet in VirginiaIn business, timing is everything -- and Virginia groups' timing was lousy this year. With GOP gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore leading in October polls, business organizations hopped on his bandwagon. . . .
But Kilgore's corporate corps miscalculated. The Republican's campaign cratered, and Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine, a pro-business, fiscally conservative Democrat, easily won. Kaine says he'll forgive old differences and work with business to build Virginia's economy. But Democrats are unlikely to forget anytime soon.
Forgiving is virtuous. But, the next time Virginian business leaders jump on the "bandwagon" of the economically and culturally backwards far-right-wing, we will be sure to remember and remind them of 2005.
