The General Assembly is bombarding Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) with bills.Generally the governor will have received about 50 to 100 bills by this time in the legislative session. But as of Friday morning, he had already received 451.

Any bills Kaine receives before tomorrow (one week before the legislative session is expected to end) need to be signed, amended or vetoed within seven days. Any bills Kaine receives after Saturday do not need to be reviewed for 30 days.

Kaine has signed about 50 non-controversial bills so far. About 1,000 bills are still being considered by the legislature.
Well, it certainly looks like Gov. Kaine will be earning his salary the next few weeks. But all kidding aside, why does the governor have only one week to review and make decisions on 451 bills? Is that absurd or what? I mean, that's almost 70 bills per day, or 3 per hour if Gov. Kaine doesn't sleep for a week (it's 7 per hour -- 1 every 8 minutes -- if he works 10 hours per day). This is nuts.
Otherwise, I don't recall having heard of 450 pieces of substantive legislation being produced by this General Assembly -- unless I'm having a Rip Van Winkle moment...
