The original ad from Hillary.  Obama's on the flip....

The really rapid response from Obama.

Priceless! (elevandoski - 2/29/2008 8:46:03 PM)
Love it!

Richard Danzig -It's 3:00 a.m. (Flipper - 2/29/2008 9:19:50 PM)
Fron First Read on msnbc.com:

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan:
"On a conference call to respond to the "3 am" ad that the Clinton campaign went on air with today, former Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig, an Obama supporter, gave a terse response when asked if Clinton should drop out after March 4th."

"I would encourage you on March 5th to call Sen. Clinton at 3 a.m. and ask that question," Danzig said."

When in doubt... (Kindler - 2/29/2008 9:49:49 PM)
...scare people to get votes.

Sad, sad, sad.

but the Obama riposte defuses that (teacherken - 2/29/2008 9:56:47 PM)
and it is interesting that they got it on the air in less than12 hours after the Clinton ad when public

Very impressive by the Obama campaign (Lowell - 2/29/2008 10:02:43 PM)
to respond so quickly to the Clinton ad.  This bodes very well for rapid response during the general election against John McCain.  No "Swift Boat" lack of response this time around!

And actually (elevandoski - 2/29/2008 10:14:59 PM)
insert himself into the ad! You don't it's a Hillary ad until the end and the viewer isn't necessarily led to believe the answer to the question is Hillary. Obama totally takes ownership of the ad in more ways than one.

excellent observation (chiefsjen - 3/1/2008 7:21:48 PM)
it's a fine piece of politickin' -- i love it!

I am so impressed (vadem2008 - 2/29/2008 10:05:05 PM)
Obama has run such a stellar campaign and this is just another example- a fantastic rapid response to the Clinton "scare" tactic.  So much money is being wasted on continuing these primaries.  I wish Clinton would concede and donate to a worthwhile charity, like our economy!

Somewhat different view . . . (JPTERP - 2/29/2008 10:57:39 PM)
I think the beauty of an active campaign like this is that it has given Obama a chance to define himself in advance of November.  For a relatively new figure to the national scene this is absolutely essential.

After March 4th, the dynamic will change a bit.

Regardless of what Clinton does, I think Obama will spend fairly heavily to soften the ground up in advance of the general election -- especially in places like Pennsylvania.

This also helps to open up his options as far as public financing during the general election.  It's a different ball game if he's locked into an $85 million cap after having spent $250-$300 million during the primaries -- as opposed to having spent $150 million.

As other viewers of these dueling ads have said (Dana - 2/29/2008 10:13:30 PM)
"You could've knitted a sweater in the time it takes for her to answer the phone."

And, "At least he answered it before it rang  times."

I continue to be impressed by the rapid and smart responses of his campaign people.  Obama also hits hard but with such verbal wit and dexterity that he comes across as cool and confident.

I mean (Dana - 2/29/2008 10:14:16 PM)
At least he answered it before it rang 6 times.

Its 3 am.. (Rebecca - 2/29/2008 10:46:36 PM)
And the Obama staff is on third shift making TV ads. The campaign that never sleeps....

Here's an ad for you (Rebecca - 2/29/2008 10:51:33 PM)
Just a joke, but...

Its 3 am, same shots of the children..., etc.

A phone is ringing....

Monica picks it up...

She say "Bill, is that you?"

there is a variant of this already: (teacherken - 2/29/2008 11:24:33 PM)
it uses the video from the CLinton ad, but changes the soundtrack a bit - the phone is answered by Bill C, with the sounds of a young woman moaning in the background, and ends with the voice of Hillary saying "Shame on you!" with a response in Bill's voice of "What did I do?"   It is a bit over the top . . .   I have been jumping around so many sites today I don't remember where I saw it, and really don't have time to find it.

ah, I found it: (teacherken - 2/29/2008 11:26:30 PM)

Wow! (Rebecca - 3/1/2008 12:14:45 AM)
Tt could be fun responding to these ads if you have people on the net as fast and creative as this! Bring 'em on!

Dexterity (GinterParked - 3/1/2008 12:04:46 AM)
Obama's campaign is clearly the winner in this round.  He got an effective repsonse out in a nearly unprecendented time.  His team dropped everything and executed.

On the other hand, Hillary's commercial was nothing topical.  It's really nothing more than what she's been saying for some time.  It took some time to produce.  I assume it got vetted.  Maybe she watched it herself a couple of times.  Maybe she slept on it... and maybe at 3 am one night, she woke thinking about whether it was a good idea to run it.

She should have slept in.

The viral plays (including Obama's) on this misbegotten piece of political comedy have already eclipsed the originial.  Political science professors will be pointing to this for some time as an example of the law of unintended consequences.

It's 3 a.m. (Dana - 2/29/2008 11:16:38 PM)
a phone is ringing. . .

Hello, Obama Headquarters, working for you.

This was posted on YouTube in Jan. from a McCain supporter (Chris Guy - 3/1/2008 12:20:10 AM)

Bill Clinton defends Obama: (Chris Guy - 3/1/2008 12:20:56 AM)

wow. (spotter - 3/1/2008 8:05:52 AM)
This should be a whole separate Obama commercial.

By the way, why is Hillary awake at 3:00 a.m., fully dressed, and wearing makeup, lipstick, and jewelry?  Why is the generic parent fully dressed?

Yes (Rebecca - 3/1/2008 11:49:52 AM)
By the time she gets dressed New York is a pile of rubble.

Because (HisRoc - 3/1/2008 7:30:25 PM)
Hillary is always up at 3 AM waiting for Bill to come stumbling in.

;-}

Android theory (Oakton Dem - 3/2/2008 1:52:50 AM)
B/c she is really an android (and would not need sleep).  That's why there is so much talk of trying to "humanize" her on the campaign trail.

Of course she is dressed (jackiehva - 3/2/2008 12:48:14 PM)
she's been wandering the streets of DC looking for Bill.

This is the perfect counter - President Clinton's own words (relawson - 3/1/2008 9:51:42 AM)
The problem with the Clinton ad is that this same ad is going to be used again by McCain in the general.  And they will certainly point out who the original author was.

Clinton just harmed the Democrats here.  This is really just an example of more discusting behavior out of the Clinton campaign.

They have no shame, so it is really pointless to attempt to shame Hillary Clinton.  There seems to be nothing she won't do to win this election.

Why is Barack's video no longer available? (vadem2008 - 3/1/2008 10:02:35 AM)
I checked his website and it's not available there either.

Good question, don't know, but I found a copy (Lowell - 3/1/2008 10:06:09 AM)

Cincinnati Enquirer endorses Obama (Lowell - 3/1/2008 12:34:30 PM)
See here for more:

...perhaps Obama's most impressive achievement so far is the excitement he has engendered in the political process itself.

He is a gifted public speaker, and the energy he brings to his campaign seems to have brought many people, including many young people, into the political process for the first time.

Obama has an undeniable appeal that is attracting people of divergent backgrounds. He seems able to find ways to work even with people who don't share his views.

We believe that of the two, he has the better chance at quickly creating the working coalitions that would allow for the progress a new administration will need in dealing with the issues at hand.

I keep envisioning the phone ringing (Catzmaw - 3/1/2008 5:10:22 PM)
and Bill lunging over the top of Hillary and struggling with her to see who gets to answer.  I just can't imagine he wouldn't try to take control if given half a chance.

Man, don't piss off Dick Morris! (Lowell - 3/1/2008 5:22:44 PM)
This is simply brutal.

Dick is always that way (cvllelaw - 3/1/2008 6:27:57 PM)
Remember that his work for Bill Clinton was an anomaly -- he just about always works for Republicans.  I have been getting his e-mails this year for some reason, and they are so brutally anti-Hillary as to be laughable.  He's not much of an Obama fan either.

Well, Lowell (aznew - 3/1/2008 9:22:13 PM)
Nothing in this article that I haven't already seen posted here on RK or other places on the Internets.

Dick Morris is.... (Flipper - 3/1/2008 9:31:50 PM)
full of hot air and has become a vessel for the right, spewing their manure and garbage on FOX news.

What a prick.

Wasn't he always a slimeball? (Lowell - 3/1/2008 9:39:56 PM)
Including when Bill Clinton brought him into the White House to figure out how to "triangulate" better?

More on this... (Lowell - 3/1/2008 9:43:21 PM)
...from Wikipedia:

Morris is best known for his influence over Bill Clinton's presidency. Even though Clinton and Morris came from different ends of the political spectrum, Morris became the president's most trusted advisor, especially in terms of marketing and "selling" policy decisions. A shrewd expert on polls and trends, Morris encouraged Clinton to pursue so-called third way policies of triangulation that merged traditional Republican and Democratic proposals, rhetoric, and issues to achieve maximum political gain and popularity.

The president consulted Morris in secret beginning in 1994.[1] In the words of Clinton's Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, "I always had the feeling that the president wanted to listen to the dark side, even though he clearly knew in his guts where the issues were and what he wanted to do. He always wanted to listen to the Morris voice to kind of say, what are the thoughts of the most kind of manipulative operation that could go on in politics? I want to hear that voice. I want to hear what he's thinking." Clinton's communications director George Stephanopoulos has said that "Over the course of the first nine months of 1995, no single person had more power over the president, and therefore over the government, than Dick Morris, no question about it." Morris went on to become Campaign manager of Bill Clinton's successful 1996 bid for re-election to the office of President of the United States. His tenure on that campaign was cut short two months before the election, when it was revealed that he had allowed a prostitute, Sherry Rowlands, to listen in on conversations with the President...

My god, I had forgotten a lot of that.  What a slimeball.  The question is, why was Bill Clinton so inclined to "listen to the dark side," as Leon Panetta says?

I don't think he ever quite forgave the Clintons (aznew - 3/1/2008 9:48:40 PM)
for the way they cut him loose after he was caught with that prostitute.

Well, ain't that special (Lowell - 3/1/2008 10:00:33 PM)
I don't know about you, but it gives me a big warm and fuzzy feeling to know that Bill Clinton was tight with this slimeball.

"One of the most harebrained posts I've ever read" (aznew - 3/1/2008 9:44:23 PM)
That's a quote from Kevin Drum about this Ann Althouse post:

http://althouse.blogspot.com/2...

Occasionally, Ann hits just the right unhinged note so that her blog becomes self parody. I get a nasty feeling we will be hearing more about this in the next couple of days, bu this post will also go down in history.
