The slump in the housing market and the added cost of illegal immigration enforcement has created a revenue shortfall in Prince William County.County Executive Craig Gerhart's proposed budget for the next fiscal year includes a 28 percent increase in the property tax rate to cover the shortfall. Under the proposal, the tax rate would rise from 78.7 cents to $1.01 for each $100 of assessed value.
For his part, Corey Stewart says "We need a flat tax bill that makes room for the illegal-immigration crackdown." We'll see if Stewart can pull that one off, but it's sure not going to be easy given all the other pressing needs (e.g., staffing at the fire department) in the county. Stewart had better figure something out fast (the budget is scheduled for adoption on April 29), because it's nearly impossible to imagine someone who jacked up tax rates ever winning the Republican nomination for anything, let alone lieutenant governor.
I certainly don't want he or his sycophantic cronies spending it on their issues...
