Doin' Something: Fight the Political Imprisonment of Former Governor Don Siegelman

This past Sunday 60 Minutes examined the supposed case against former Governor of Alabama, Don Siegelman, Democrat, and illustrated the flimsiness of the prosecution, no persecution, of this man, for the "crime" of being a Democrat in a position the Republican Machiavellis coveted.  First, Rovian clones trump up charges for a recall of Calif. Gov. Gray Davis.  Then they hijacked the re-districting process in Texas.  Now their handiwork turns more cynical.

The 60 Minutes story begins:

(CBS) Is Don Siegelman in prison because he's a criminal or because he belonged to the wrong political party in Alabama? Siegelman is the former governor of Alabama, and he was the most successful Democrat in that Republican state. ut while he was governor, the U.S. Justice Department launched multiple investigations that went on year after year until, finally, a jury convicted Siegelman of bribery.

Now, many Democrats and Republicans have become suspicious of the Justice Department's motivations. As correspondent Scott Pelley reports, 52 former state attorneys-general have asked Congress to investigate whether the prosecution of Siegelman was pursued not because of a crime but because of politics.

Over at Democracy Prevails Blog there's a sample letter you can use to fight the political imprisonment of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.  Those 52 former state attorneys general (from both parties) from across the country have signed on in protest over the trumped up case with the alleged suspicious involvement of Karl Rove.

Blogger Blue Prevails at the Democracy Prevails Blog has posted a sample letter you can write to end this travesty of justice.  You can make a difference!  Here's the link.

Rove is just pure evil... (The Grey Havens - 2/26/2008 11:19:58 AM)

Can we say obstruction of justice? (KathyinBlacksburg - 2/26/2008 12:53:18 PM)
The White House does not have executive privilege for political acts having nothing to do with running the federal government.  And it therefore has no basis to claim executive privilege or to refuse to submit Karl Roves political communications.

The GOP fished through the Clinton White House documents just trolling for something (anything).  And now the WH refuses to turn over anything.

This is true, but sadly (aznew - 2/26/2008 1:54:25 PM)
they will probably be able to run out the clock.

And once the next president takes office, whoever he or she might be, and if history is any guide, I suspect that investigating these travesties of justice will not be a high priority.

One thing that should happen on day one, however, especially if the next president is a Democrat, is Siegelman should be released from prison, assuming he is still there. I suspect Bush would pardon him before leaving office, however, to prevent his successor from seeing justice is done.

Karl Rove is the one who ought to go to prison (Kindler - 2/26/2008 10:04:25 PM)
But he shouldn't be indicted until after Bush leaves office, so that there's no chance of Rove being pardoned.

Kathy, thanks for posting this story. I was not up to speed on this case.
