Bryant is a moderate Republican, and one of the two leaders of the revolt in the House GOP Caucus in 2004. He and Del. Chris Jones (R-Suffolk) helped convince more than 17 other Republicans to join with Gov. Mark Warner and Democrats to pass the tax and budget compromise. That effort cost Bryant, however. He left the powerful Appropriations Committee and has not been in the leadership loop in the House. He could decide he could be more effective in the executive branch.
Last session, Bryant led a largely behind-the-scenes effort to pass legislation creating a new nutrient-trading system to help clean up the environment.
