...Democrat Mark Warner still hold[s] a significant lead over Republican Jim Gilmore in the race for the U.S. Senate. Warner leads Gilmore by twenty percentage points, 57% to 37%.The race between the two former governors hasn't changed much since early January when Warner led by fifteen points.

Warner earns high levels of support from liberals (88%) and moderates (70%) and even a third of conservative voters (34%). Gilmore attracts 60% of conservatives and 24% of moderate voters.
There's also the fact that Mark Warner has about, oh, a gazillion times more money than Jim Gilmore. Finally, there's the small matter of the two men's vastly contrasting records -- Jim Gilmore nearly drove the state into a financial ditch, Mark Warner almost singlehandedly pulled it out again. In other words, barring a "macaca moment" or a scandal of John McCain proportions, it looks almost 100% likely that Mark "Not John" Warner will be Virginia's next U.S. Senator, replacing John "Not Mark" Warner. Go "Your Excellency!" :)
And this could just be an indication of how many people will vote for a Republican regardless of who it is.
