Democrat Barack Obama raised $7.2 million in less than 48 hours post Super Tuesday and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton collected $4 million, giving him a financial edge that's caused consternation within a Clinton campaign clamoring for attention-getting debates. The remarkable outpouring of contributions recorded since Tuesday's contests in 22 states comes on the heels of an eye-poppping $32 million raised by Obama in January and the record-shattering $100 million each Obama and Clinton raised in 2007 in their neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Obama has been riding a wave of fundraising from large donors and small Internet contributors. While not matching Obama's pace, Clinton also saw an online surge of donations from 35,000 new contributors since midnight Tuesday, Clinton campaign aides said.
Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests. Some senior staffers on her campaign also are voluntarily forgoing paychecks as the campaign heads into the next round of contests.
Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and will compete to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.
This is obviously fantastic news coming so hard on the heels of Obama's incredible showing on Super Tuesday and the news that Hillary has had to self-fund her own campaign to the tune of $5 Million.
The bigger picture here, however is that this fundraising is an authentic expression of the real democratization that is taking place within this campaign. Obama is being funded by small donors, regular folks who are thrilled to be a part of a movement for authentic change. These dollars are a real indication of devotion and enthusiasm among folks at the voter and volunteer level; not just the backroom fatcats.
Despite her problems, Hillary is still the frontrunner, but there is reason to believe that the Obama movement is for real, and will have the resources to fight for America every step of the way.
33% of Senator Obama's money comes from maxed-out donors, and another 33% comes from those who have given less than $200 - that's not only good news it's positively groundbreaking.
Howard Dean was quite successful with online fundraising in 2004 but his campaign obviously didn't ever get as big as what we're seeing with Obama now. Senator Clinton's money sources are more typical of a presidential campaign.
Inspirational he displays all the requisite qualities needed in a great leader and Obama will make an outstanding President.
This Cult Bullshit that is making the rounds shows a distinct ignorance of his policy positions and professional conduct. There's a reason people are lining up behind his candidacy. The fact that he inspires his followers (gaining followers all along the way) is a telling of his skill as a leader.
