A Merrick straw poll won by Democratic Sen. Barack Obama has his Long Island backers looking ahead to Super Tuesday with growing confidence. The vote - 143 for Obama to 108 for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton - is proof that they are starting to make inroads with their grass roots efforts, organizers said yesterday.Sponsored by the Bellmore- Merrick Democratic Club, the Wednesday night straw poll and forum held at Temple Beth Am in Merrick drew about 370 people. Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Huntington Town board member Susan Berland were there in support of Clinton, along with party officials and volunteers from each campaign.
There is no denying that Barack Obama has the big momentum. The question is this: does he have enough momentum to keep up with Hillary in New York and New Jersey, and make up for early voting elsewhere (California)? I certainly hope so.
