Glenn Nye Announces Candidacy Bush's favorite cheerleader, Thelma Drake, who barely won re-election in 2006 now has a challenger! Glenn Nye announced yesterday that he is running for Congress in the 2nd district.

From his press release:

Diplomat Glenn Nye Launches Bid for Congress
Nye Will Bring True Leadership to Put America Back on Track

Glenn Nye, a foreign affairs expert and former diplomat, announced today that he is running for Congress as a Democrat in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.  Nye will bring his understanding of foreign policy and ability to broker compromise to Washington, and will be a true leader for his community.

"I worked side by side with our soldiers who are doing heroic work, but I believe there is no military solution to the war in Iraq.  It's time we get our soldiers out of the line of fire through a safe and secure withdrawal.  Economically, we can help the Iraqis to help themselves, but it's time for the Iraqi government to take the lead so we can spend American money on American priorities."

We at VB Dems have been "buzzing" about Glenn here and here.  The Shad Plank picked it up here. Even CQ Politics has taken notice of this race (and gives a nice h/t to VB Dems)...

In a profile of Nye that appeared last month, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk said that he recently finished a nine-month stint with USAID in Iraq. The story said that Nye previously worked in Afghanistan and in the West Bank region of the Middle East.

Democratic bloggers in Virginia Beach cited the article in a posting entitled, "Meet (Congressman?) Glenn Nye."

CQ also mentions us Virginia Beach Democrats in the end of the article...

Democrats insist, though, Virginia's 2nd District is winnable for them. Among the party's recent candidates, Tim Kaine carried the 2nd District in his successful 2005 campaign for governor; Jim Webb lost the 2nd by just 51 percent to 48 percent in his successful 2006 statewide campaign for senator; and the Democrats in 2007 captured two state House districts in Virginia Beach that had been held by Republicans.

Yeah, baby!  Click here to read the entire press release and Glenn's bio.

Great candidate! (VA Breeze - 1/31/2008 8:01:23 PM)
It is time (actually way past time) for Drake to go! Today's Virginian-Pilot
had an editorial "Hear, Hear" talking about Drake's unquestioning support of GWB. Here, is a portion:

""I don't think any president ever wants to be a war president. When President Bush was elected, he had a very specific domestic agenda. When 9/11 happened, the whole focus was national security. He's had a difficult time conveying to the American people what his decisions have been. He's a person of very strong beliefs and principles. But he has the shortcoming of not being able to explain it to the American people and what it means to them personally. That's a very strong shortcoming."

Drake's view, then, is that Bush did nothing wrong but mumble."

As she tends to do whenever she's asked about the president, Drake left out a few things: Seven years of gross misjudgments, the refusal to hold any subordinate accountable, the demonizing of dissenters, the disregard for civil liberties and year after year of plain managerial neglect. We won't even mention crony capitalism, the sanctioning of torture, or the crackpot theories of an omnipotent presidency.

That quote from Thelma (spotter - 2/1/2008 7:40:04 PM)
doesn't work unless you read it out loud in a foolish-sounding falsetto.
