Top U.S. transportation officials today told Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and a roomful of other lawmakers and state officials that they have significant concerns that could threaten the proposed extension of Metrorail to Dulles International Airport.Kaine (D) and the Virginia entourage met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and other federal officials for two hours on Capitol Hill. Afterward, Kaine briefed reporters in the Russell Senate Office Building.
"I would say that they have concerns that are significant, many of which for the first time we are hearing," Kaine said, without elaborating on what the federal government's concerns are.
Kaine said that federal officials agreed to deliver their concerns in writing by the end of the day. He also said they agreed to delay a decision on federal funding for the $5 billion rail line until Virginia has a chance to respond. Kaine promised a response by Monday.
In other news, utility relocation has already begun in the Tysons area. All of which would only make sense if the project goes forward with aboveground rail.
