Bearing Drift Slams Lee-Jackson Day

Well, I've got to say that this is a surprise from a leading Virginia Republican blog:

Once again, Virginia continues its backwards practice of honoring people that supported an institution that did not honor the freedom of a free people.

[...]

Principle and honor is unfounded if it is based on the blood and tears of a brutalized society. There was nothing honorable or normal about an institution in Virginia and other confederate states that held their prosperity at the expense of the freedom of the human soul.

Virginia Republicans need to remember Lee and Jackson as men who were committed to preserving a disreputable institution as opposed to standing up for the cause of freedom.

I was thinking of making a snarky comment, but frankly, I'm speechless.  What next, James Young takes up the cause of working people against rapacious corporations?  Ha.

B-b-but it's southern HERITAGE! (Johnny Longtorso - 1/19/2008 10:15:12 AM)
Coming from Maryland, even though it was a border state, I can't fathom how this holiday is accepted. I suppose it's better than when they lumped it in with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Of course, I heard two coworkers discussing the holiday, and they thought that "Lee Jackson" was one person. So a lot of people probably don't even realize what it means.

What is it with this whole "heritage" thing anyway? (Lowell - 1/19/2008 10:30:42 AM)
I mean, wooden teeth, gout and cholera epidemics are part of our "heritage" as well, do we want to go back to those too?  All kidding aside, the point is that there are good and bad things in our "heritage," shouldn't we emulate the good parts and learn the error of our ways from the bad parts?

Heh (kestrel9000 - 1/19/2008 12:11:19 PM)
Two of the biggest blogoshpherical pains in my kestrel ass are in there defending Lee-Jackson Day: Spank and Alex "Jonathan Maxfield" Davis.
Figures. Yes, indeed, it does.
"Heritage, not Hate" is like "Fox News: Fair and Balanced."
If it was true, they wouldn't have to say it.

Last year did same (Vivian J. Paige - 1/19/2008 1:27:49 PM)
Here is their post from 2007 on the same topic. They have been consistent on this.

Not consistent anymore? (Lowell - 1/22/2008 8:53:35 AM)
It looks like the diary is gone.  What's THAT all about?

A Tip of the Hat (connie - 1/19/2008 2:49:44 PM)
To Bearing Drift.  Lee Jackson Day or Lee Jackson King.... day or whatever they want to call it is an embarrassment to this Commonwealth.  It was  an obvious and not so thinly veiled effort to spit in the face of those who sought to recognize Dr. King's efforts by combining what should be "his" day with a recognition of two gentlemen who would have preferred to see King's anchestors in chains.

I cannot believe someone doesn't sponsor a bill to DO AWAY WITH THIS RIDICULOUS COMBINATION each and every session of the General Assembly until it's done.  I think the national publicity that such a bill could engender might be enough to embarrass the VAG into passing it.  Note I say "might".... Some people up there seem to be clueless and without shame about things that are obvious to the rest of the country...

Gilmore in 2000 (elevandoski - 1/19/2008 4:09:32 PM)
Did separate the 2 days. I'd agree that Lee Jackson Day should be gotten rid of.  Check out this image I snagged from the City of Chesapeake.  They were closed yesterday in "honor" of Lee Jackson Day.  Unbelievable!

Kirwin is an idiot (Peninsula Pete - 1/21/2008 6:34:20 AM)
This is especially surprising, given that Brian Kirwin is a bonafide, idiot and never does anything unless its self serving and designed to make Kiriwin look good.

The bigger question is, 'Why is anyone even reading this(bearing drift) boring, sad blog?"  Biggest collection of intellectually dishonest, morons in Virginia.
