A Mississippi judge has invalidated the Nov. 4 special election date set by Gov. Haley Barbour to replace retired U.S. Sen. Trent Lott.A Hinds County Circuit judge ruled Barbour had exceeded his constitutional authority, according to the Clarion-Ledger. He said the special election should be held "within 90 days of the governor's Dec. 20, 2007, proclamation of writ of election ... on or before March 19, 2008."
Primary races are scheduled for March 11.
For those who haven't been watching the race- Governor Haley Barbour (R) decided to disregard the law applying to special elections in Mississippi (which requires a special election within 90 days of a vacancy) and instead ordered the election be held in November when Republicans would have a clear advantage. Mississippi's Democratic Attorney General sued to have the election date changed and was apparently successful.
There are 2 Democratic Candidates- Governor Ronnie Musgrove and Congressman Ronnie Shows who will face Barbour's interim appointee- Congressman Roger Wicker (R). The latest poll shows Musgrove (D) beating Wicker (R) by a 48-34 margin.
I hope the good people on Raising Kaine will help pressure both the Republican leaders in the House and the Democratic leaders in the Senate to approve non-partisan redistricting. Virginia Democrats can stand up and show that we're the party of good government!
He has an interesting history and is generally a good guy.
