Neck and Neck in Michigan? UPDATE: Romney Edges Out McCain

After the NH debacle, I've pretty much decided that public opinion polls have to be taken with a huge grain -- hell, a PILLAR -- of salt.  With that caveat, and for what it's worth, Zogby says that Michigan is neck and neck heading into the Republican primary today.  According to Zogby, it's McCain at 27%, Romney at 26%, and Huckster-bee at 15%.  Others are in single digits (Paul at 8%, Thompson at 5%, Ghoul-iani at 3%).

All I have to say is, go Mitt Romney! :)

UPDATE 7:10 PM: The exit polls reportedly are looking good for Mitt Romney.  Go Mitt! :)

UPDATE 7:20 PM: The Washington Post asks whether a Romney victory in Michigan could lead to a "brokered convention" for the Republicans.

UPDATE 8:00 PM: Polls close in much of Michigan; Drudge reports (for what it's worth) Romney 34, McCain 28, Huckabee 16

UPDATE 8:15 PM: Campaign Spot has it at Romney 35, McCain 29, Huckabee 15, Ron Paul 10, Giuliani 4 from the exit polls (not counting absentees).

UPDATE 8:50 PM: With 6% reporting, it's Romney 37%, McCain 31%, Huckabee 16%, the rest in single digits.

UPDATE 9:01 PM: MSNBC calls it: "BREAKING NEWS: Romney edges McCain to win Michigan GOP primary, NBC declares"

UPDATE Wednesday: There's a lot of talk today about how the GOP is "adrift, deeply divided and uninspired."  Who will keep the splintering Republican coalition (social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, national security conservatives, independents, libertarians, etc.) together?  Can anyone?

Just get rid of him(Romney) already. (Compassionate Conservative - 1/15/2008 3:43:24 PM)
I'm not up for this "Democrats voting for Mitt Romney".  Just get rid of him already.  I understand there's probably more readily available material to make fun of him but I'm so disgusted by him that I can't stand another day.  Anybody with me here?

I disagree -- between Huckabee, Romney, Thompson, and Giuliani, the four of them are so terrible, and alternately backwards and unprincipled, that the more I get to see them running against each other, the better.

McCain's the only one who's principled and a decent person on the other side -- I'm afraid to run against him, but I'm rooting for him to get the nomination because I think he's an honorable man and we're always best served with honorable candidates.

I won't be rooting for McCain in Michigan though, because the longer it's a five-person race, the better!

This is pretty funny...

So says the Nevada Supreme Court, ruling in favor of NBC.

A Very Disappointing Result Because... (HisRoc - 1/15/2008 11:43:11 PM)
...it shows how badly both the Republicans and Democrats in Michigan are in denial.

Lets face it:  smokestack America is gone and it isn't coming back.  That has been old news since the late 1980's.

Romney:  As President I will bring back the auto industry and the good jobs it provided when I was a child here in the 60's.

McCain:  The jobs that are gone will not be coming back.  As President I will ensure that the workforce in Michigan is re-trained and redeployed to be successful in the New Economy.

Michigan voted for the Old Economy.  I know, some will characterize the New Economy as McJobs.  That is true for those who don't embrace reality and seek re-training.  "You want fries with that?"
