Go Mitt Romney!

I don't like Mitt Romney in the least bit.  I don't like his personality. I don't like his ideology. I don't like anything about him.  Well, apparently I'm not alone.  According to a new CNN poll released today, 62% of registered voters nationwide say they will DEFINITELY NOT VOTE for Mitt Romney.  In contrast, only 13% say they will definitely vote FOR Mitt Romney.  That's a net "Definitely not" of 49 percentage points.  To use some highly technical polling language, those results...well, they suck.

How bad do Romney's results suck?  Let's look at the other major candidates "Definitely for"/"Definitely not" percentages and compare them to Romney's -49 percentage points score.

Huckabee: 15%/52% (-37 percentage points)
Giuilani: 19%/55% (-36 percentage points)
McCain: 22%/43% (-21 percentage points)

Obama: 30%/38% (-8 percentage points)
Clinton: 37%/43% (-6 percentage points)

That's right, Republicans start off the 2008 election cycle at a huge disadvantage to the two leading Democratic contenders.  Even John McCain, who performs the best in the CNN poll, has only 22% saying they'd definitely vote for him and 43% saying they defintetly wouldn't.  Given all this, these are the predictable general election head-to-heads:

Obama: 56%
Giuliani: 40%

Obama: 59%
Romney: 37%

Obama: 58%
Huckabee: 39%

Clinton: 55%
Giuilani: 42%

Clinton: 58%
Romney: 40%

Clinton: 56%
Huckabee: 42%

Again, the only Republican with a chance in hell is John McCain, who's essentially tied (48-49%)with Obama and Clinton (48%-50%).  In other words, if Republicans nominate anyone except for John McCain, they're probably going to get blown out.  Of course, that's fine with me, which is why I say:

GO MITT ROMNEY!

Unfortunately (Johnny Longtorso - 1/12/2008 7:06:22 PM)
it looks like McCain is going to get the nomination. Romney will be toast if he doesn't win Michigan, and even if he does, he'll probably still come in third in South Carolina. Giuliani will be a non-issue by Super Tuesday, so it'll be a battle between McCain and Huckabee, which McCain will win. He has more name recognition, and will play better in the delegate-rich states like California and New York. Huckabee is pretty much confined to the South and Midwest, where there just aren't enough contests to offset the big states.

Probably, but ... (Ron1 - 1/12/2008 7:19:51 PM)
the thing about Romney is that he can keep racking up 2nd place delegates and, as long as the spread isn't too large, he might still win. He leads the delegate count as of now; the question is, how much of his fortune is he willing to spend for the right to get slaughtered in November?

I am beginning to think that the Dem nomination will go at least through March, when Texas and Ohio have primaries, and maybe through April (Pennsylvania, the last large state to vote, I believe). The Repub contest could very well have the same dynamic, if Romney wants to spend his dough.

I, like Lowell, still root for Romney, but would be fine with Huckabee.

McCain will not be President, but it will be closer if he's the nominee. The President will be either Obama or Clinton (hopefully Obama).

For anyone wondering: (Va Blogger2 - 1/12/2008 7:59:52 PM)
Clinton: 50
McCain: 48

Obama: 49
McCain: 48

Thank you, Va Blogger2 (OaktonResident - 1/13/2008 8:50:58 AM)
I definitely was wondering.

Past is Prologue (TurnPWBlue - 1/12/2008 8:41:40 PM)
I recall similar confidence in 2004--unpopular incumbent...strong Democratic field...it was a slam dunk for Dems.  And yet...

Let's not start counting those chickens, OK?  Confidence is good, but there still is a lot of work to do between now and November.

Shoe's on the other foot (Johnny Longtorso - 1/12/2008 8:46:38 PM)
the Republicans are running against Hillary, not for themselves. It's not a winning strategy, as we found out.

Obviously there's a lot of work to do (Lowell - 1/12/2008 10:18:12 PM)
and nobody's talking about a "slam dunk."  I'm just very much looking forward to Mitt Romney being the Republican nominee, let's put it that way! :)

If you believe the polls at all (Lowell - 1/13/2008 8:55:14 AM)
Two new ones give Mitt Romney the lead in Michigan.

Mason Dixon
Mitt-mentum: 30%
McCain: 22%
Huckster-bee: 17%
Thompson: 7%
Ghoul-iani: 6%

Detroit Free Press
Romney: 27%
McCain: 22%
Huckabee: 16%

Go Mitt!

unless your name is John Edwards.  In that case polls have recently shown you winning handily against McCain (and every other GOP candidate), a fact that was rarely reported.
Unfortunately, Cnadidate "status-quo" and Candidate "Kum-Ba-Ya" seem to be getting all the press.  Personally I prefer bread and butter (& meat).

I'll stick with my candidate-John Edwards, I'll ork for his nomination and I'll worry less about who the GOP chooses.
