Ballot Access Watch

In Virginia, Democratic and Republican campaigns have until April 15, 2005 to file their signatures, and Independent candidates have until June 14th, the day of the primary elections. All statewide candidates must file at least 10,000 signatures, with at least 400 from each of the state's 11 Congressional Districts. Who's made it on, and who may not is below the fold...

Before I start this list, let me say one quick note about my methodology: I have interviewed individuals inside the various campaigns, and consulted the candidate's websites, as well as news articles. If I have made an error, it was not intentional, and please let me know so that I can fix it.

Candidates for Governor:
Lt. Governor Tim Kaine(D) Has 17,386 Signatures

Warrenton Mayor George Fitch(R) No Info Avaliable

William Hudgins(R) No Info Avaliable

Ex-Attorney General Jerry Kilgore(R) His campaign declined to give an estimate of how many signatures Mr. Kilgore has collected. However, he is expected to make it on the ballot.

Ex-Richmond City Council Member Shirley Harvey (I) 4,400 Signatures

GOP State Senator Russ Potts(I) No Info Avaliable

Candidates for Lt. Governor:
State Delegate Viola Baskerville(D) Will have "well over 13,000" signatures.

Ex-Congresswoman Leslie Byrne(D) Filed petitions On March 30th.

State Delegate Chap Petersen(D) Filed petitions on April 8th.

State Senator Phil Puckett(D) No Info Avaliable

State Senator Bill Bolling(R) Filed almost 14,500 signatures on April 7th.

Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chair Sean Connaughton(R) Filed almost 14,000 signatures.

Attorney Gil Davis(R) No Info Avaliable

State Senator Emmett Hanger(R) No Info Avaliable, but his late entry has led many to think that he may not appear on the ballot due to his lack of time to collect the signatures.

Transportation Consultant Mark Hopkins(I) No Info Avaliable

Candidates for Attorney General:
Sate Senator Creigh Deeds(D) No Info Avaliable

Attorney Steve Baril(R) No Info Avaliable

State Delegate Bob McDonnell(R) Filed 17,296 signatures on March 29th.

For the candidate's "description," I used the highest office that they have reached. Many of the candidates have served in several different posistions, and I encourage you ("you" being VA voters), to visit their websites and inform yourself about them before going to vote.

Disclaimer: I work for RaisingKaine.com, a grassroots group supporting Tim Kaine for Governor, and I am an unpaid intern with Chap Petersen for Lt. Governor.
