This Just In: Joe Gibbs Out

Looks like the New Hampshire primary is only the second-biggest story in DC today. Joe Gibbs just quit:
Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is resigning, according to Redskins sources. The team is planning a press conference this afternoon to discuss the Hall of Famer's decision to leave as both coach and team president.

No decision has been made on a replacement for Gibbs, who has spent a total 16 years with the organization in two stints. A process will be put in place, team sources said, to choose one.

Gibbs had been criticized as unable to adjust to today's NFL, but the Redskins' surprise playoff run seemed to quiet that talk. It'll be interesting to hear why Gibbs is quitting.

Do you think the team is better off moving forward with a new coach? Should they promote defensive coordinator Gregg Williams? Or do you think that it doesn't matter who coaches the team as long as Dan Snyder and his cronies are picking the players?

Williams (Chris Guy - 1/8/2008 10:47:34 AM)
Gregg Williams should get the job. He's turned down head coaching offers elsewhere to stay with the Skins. And it's the defense that is the heart and soul of this team.

And it sure (Eric - 1/8/2008 11:04:16 AM)
appeared that when he took the defensive coord. (sorry, I'm using that idiotic title they made up) job that they more or less had an arrangement he would take over when Gibbs left.  Maybe they even had a formal arrangement?  I don't recall the specifics.

Other top coaching talent to look for: Bill Cowher.

And the good thing is that Gibbs will still be involved to some degree.  Hopefully he'll be able to keep Snyder under control - otherwise we'll have yet another team of over-paid, past-their-prime, former big names who can't break .500

According to Williams' Wikipedia entry ... (TheGreenMiles - 1/8/2008 11:10:38 AM)
"His 2006 contract extension stipulates that he will receive a $1 million bonus/compensation if he does not succeed Joe Gibbs as Redskins' Head Coach. He must still be with the team at the time of Gibbs's retirement."

Will miss Gibbs... (Subi9 - 1/8/2008 11:25:50 AM)
It's sad to see Joe Gibbs go, but I'm glad he is going out on a high note after reaching the playoffs again after a very tough season. I think he was the right man and coach at the right time to pull this team through after the death of their star player, way too many injuries to key players, and the loss of their starting QB. He gave us an exciting season.  And what a story....the team rallies back with 4 straight wins to make it to the playoffs again, led by Todd Collins who had not started a game in 10 years, and was the oldest QB to ever start his first playoff game.

I think Joe Gibbs has always represented the Redskins and Washington with class, and he is a tough act to follow. Greg Williams is the heir apparent, and probably the right choice to lead the team without losing continuity. He knows the players, has the relationships, knows their strengths and weaknesses, and has been a head coach before. He's also younger than Saunders so he's probably the choice for the future like Obama...had to through a little politics in the mix.

Snyder is not popular in this town, and there are many valid reasons why...I do believe he loves the team, and did a good thing bringing Joe Gibbs back to Washington. I also think its time to bring pass the reins and leverage the success they found this season with new leadership. I think Williams deserves the shot.

Well said (floodguy - 1/8/2008 12:31:06 PM)

How about players should play, coaches should coach, managers should manage, and owners should own.

Under Snyder's, who's roll developed into a full-time owner & co-GM, Gibbs was a quasi co-GM and one head of a triple-headed coaching staff.  Gibbs either wanted it that way or he accepted this based on Snyders insistance to play GM.  It was weird and despite the highest appreciation for Gibbs and love of the Skins, I'm glad the coaching situation and maybe the front office, will return to a more traditional organization.
