Last night, we witnessed history in the making in Iowa. Senator Barack Obama's stunning victory there portends an extraordinary year of change for America at every level of our society.
Nationally, Senator Obama brings a fresh, new approach to tackling the urgent issues or our day, an approach based on consensus, inclusiveness, and imagination. This is why I publicly endorsed Senator Obama three weeks ago at my campaign kickoff. His campaign is the embodiment of centrist, solution-focused politics. That's a truly winning combination which resonates with all voters regardless of party. It's also a combination we should mirror in the months ahead regardless of who the Democratic presidential nominee might ultimately be.
Governor Kaine confirmed this last night in his press release congratulating the Senator, "Tonight we have seen that Iowans, like people here in Virginia and across America, are looking for real change in Washington."
And that notion simply could not be more relevant than here in the Virginia 10th congressional district. We simply must change the types of candidates we field to unseat entrenched incumbents mired firmly in the past. In a real sense, Senator Obama has given us the template for victory.
For the first time in many years, you are going to have a choice in Virginia's 10th congressional district-a real choice. Our candidate must be able to appeal to the moderate, urban east as well as the rural, more conservative west. It's consensus politics, pure and simple. And it's an exciting opportunity for Virginia Democrats to break new and exciting ground and help us take Virginia in a new direction.
I congratulate Senator Obama and look forward to carrying the message of change to all the voters of the 10th congressional district over the next 10 months.
