This is exciting news:

The "Virginia Clean Energy Future Act" will be introduced by Senator Chap Peterson in this years Virginia General Assembly.  This is our vision for Virginia's energy future.

The bill will:
1    Create incentives for in-state renewable energy and manufacturing
2    Create a Green Jobs training program; and
3    Set a standard of 20% renewable energy and 10% improvement in efficiency.

This is great news, definitely a bill that should be passed this year. If you agree, please contact your legislator and let them know.  Also, please consider participating in the Clean Energy Lobby Day on January 21.  Thanks.

P.S.  For more on Chap's "vision for our community, our state and our world," see his Virginia 2.0 plan.

The folks at the CCAN meeting... (elevandoski - 1/2/2008 8:45:45 AM)
in Virginia Beach were all a buzz about this!  Is Clean Energy Lobby Day the same as VCN/VALCV's Lobby Day?  Both are Jan. 21 so I suspect "yes".

I believe they're all working (Lowell - 1/2/2008 8:48:10 AM)
together, yes.

Not Yet (Waldo Jaquith - 1/2/2008 8:46:30 AM)
Though don't bother contacting your legislator until it's actually been introduced. :) If the LA can't tally up support for SBXXX -- just some hypothetical bill that they've never heard of -- it's just shouting into the void.

CCAN has the contact form up on (Lowell - 1/2/2008 8:51:09 AM)
its website now.  The legislation will be introduced shortly, I believe there will be a press conference on Monday, January 7 to announce just that.  In the meantime, I see no harm in letting your legislators know how you feel.  Tell them early, tell them often - you want action on global climate change, energy efficiency, renewable power, and a "Cool Commonwealth."

By the way, can you imagine JMDD (Lowell - 1/2/2008 8:52:30 AM)
ever introducing something like this?  The point is, for people who are cynical about politics and say "they're all the same, it doesn't make a difference," I introduce Chap's Clean Energy Future Act as Exhibit A that your choices do, indeed, matter.

Great point (TheGreenMiles - 1/2/2008 9:36:51 AM)
It's quite a turnaround for Fairfax - from conservative foot-dragging to clean energy pioneering!

What's a (Sui Juris - 1/2/2008 8:59:37 AM)
"Green Jobs training program", and why do we need it?

Couldn't find any details of this on the CCAN or Peterson sites.

Clean Energy for VA (hereinva - 1/2/2008 12:26:56 PM)
Having Chap Petersen introduce the Clean Energy Future Act
is quite a step forward for Virginia. Whether the VA state legislature is willing to act is another challenge.

We have seen that uranium mining is back on the front pages of the local news. Apparently folks in Pittsylvania County, VA are sitting on the North American mother lode of uranium  and there has been considerable interest and lobbying going on to re-institute uranium mining in Virginia. Today's Washington Post has another article on the situation.

Is the Green Jobs training program similar to the Apollo Alliance (http://www.apolloalliance.org) proposals and "green collar" jobs-training ?
