Democratic Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, Virginia's only black U.S. representative, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in his quest for the Democratic presidential nomination, Scott announced in a statement this morning.Several presidential hopefuls had courted Scott, who represents parts of Tidewater and Richmond. Scott, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, is credited with having a polished political operation effective at turning out voters for past state and federal candidates."America is at a crossroads. We can either remain mired in the politics of the past, or press forward and elect a President who can unite us around the sobering challenges," Scott said in a statement. "Senator Barack Obama offers change we can believe in, and that is why I support his candidacy."
Scott, who has been mentioned as a possible future candidate for Virginia governor or U.S. senator, said Obama's record of public service "is a resounding testament to his ability to build bridges across party lines."
In a conference call with reporters, Scott said he thinks Obama is the most electable Democratic candidate. He noted that both Sen. James Webb (D-Va) and Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) relied on Obama's public support during their respective races.
"Obama has cross over appeal," Scott said. "He does better among Independents and Republicans than some of the other candidates do."
Virginia is holding its presidential primary Feb. 12.
Last year, Kaine became one of the first governors in the country to endorse Obama. Kaine plans to campaign for Obama this weekend in South Carolina and Iowa.
But Obama would need a very STRONG Vice Presidental team-mate. Who was that guy the Gov. Tim Kaine was touting??
What's his name?? .... Oh yeah, that Jim Webb fella.
The greatest re-alignment in our modern politics will come when the Rednecks come together with Blacks, as they have far more income then differences.
I poorly para-phrase .... but I'm "Born Fighting".
