PW County Budget Raises Taxes, Doesn't Fund Immigrant Measure

It didn't take long for a does of reality to hit the Prince William County board of supervisors.  The Manassas Journal Messenger reports that the board voted yesterday on a tax rate of $1.008 per $100 of assessed value, up from the current rate of 78.7 cents per $100 of assessed value.  According to the Journal Messenger:

If the board ultimately adopts the proposed tax rate of $1.008 when it votes on the final budget on April 29, the average tax bill would go up just under 10 percent, or about $309 a year.

The average tax bill in Prince William County for fiscal 2008 was $3,385.

But wait, there's more!  Even this $1.008 tax rate would "delay new school construction" and cause class sizes to increase.  Oh, and "[t]eachers would not get salary increases."  Oh, and "services for the mentally retarded and at-risk youth would be cut."  Oh, and "[t]he Sheriff's department staff would be kept at the current level."   Last but not least, "the county probably wouldn't be able to fully fund the board's anti-illegal immigration resolution in fiscal 2009 unless something else came out of the budget."

That's right, Prince William county residents, thank your Republican-controlled board of supervisors when: a) your taxes go up sharply; b) your schools deteriorate; c) crime goes up because of cuts in funding for at-risk youth and flat funding for the Sheriff's department; and d) that immigration resolution they made such a big fuss about is never implemented because the county has no money. Heckuva job by Corey "Big Mouth, Small Results" Stewart, as always.

P.S. Stewart blusters that "There's no way on God's green earth that I'm going to support a budget that increases taxes ... and doesn't even include the illegal immigration measures."  This will be interesting to watch!

Dems: You've just been handed an enormous gift!!! (Dianne - 12/19/2007 8:35:52 AM)
Well I'm reticent to say this but shame on the Prince William County residents for not paying attention to the stories about the lack of funds for the ridiculous anti-immigration political scam (just to get elected).  Enough was written for PWC folks to know that -- by disrupting a community of people who've integrated themselves so tightly into the economy of the county and then attempt to "kick them all out" would have consequences like this (coupled with the mortgage/foreclosure problems)....no money and then having to raise taxes.

I'm hoping that the PWC Democratic Committee can tackle phony issues such as this and hone in on the consequences of the scare tactics of Republicans such as those just elected in PWC.

Start now, do your homework, use their (the Republican's) idiotic and false election tactics to take them down.  Keep up the drumbeat and work to boot them out. This is a no brainer and once again they've put it in your lap!!!

Corey's Record (PWC Resident - 12/19/2007 10:29:37 AM)
Let's not forget that Corey has only voted for one budget in his life and that was this year. Every other year he was usually the only one to vote against it. Since he is running for Lt. Gov look for him to vote no again.  Hopefully the Republican primary voters and Delegate Saxman will end his statewide and political future hopes in 2009. I doubt they will vote for someone who has increased taxes by 10 percent, among all of the others things he has done.

PWC Res.: I think your LG "higher office" choice is ri8ght on target. (Tom Counts - 12/19/2007 12:54:48 PM)
I think you and I may have the same GOP source for this "more than just a rumor" choice for Corey. During the PWC BOCS chair campaign I asked Corey if he had thought about running for higher office after the BOCS election as the Wash. Post had indicated. My question to him involved two offices. He said he'd thought about it for just a couple of minutes, implying that was as far as it went. But he didn't say if he'd made a decision that he'd serve the full 4-year term if re-elected BOCS chair or would instead run for "higher office". I didn't pursue the line of questioning, but since he didn't deny that he might run for "higher office" I thought I aready had his answer. I thought he'd probably run for another office, which may still be possible knowing his high ambitions.

The next time I see you I'll ask if your rumor source is the same as mine. I'd just love to see Corey try to run for a statewide office. He certainly has statewide name recognition, and it's in the "one trick pony" category and it's very negative of course.

This whole racist phony baloney immi issue was just to rile folks against democrats.

They wont pay for the crap they demand.

My solution???  Elect more democrats!

Pay is one of the main reasons that would keep me from staying here...my school is great, but I make 7,000 dollars less than what I would be making in Fairfax!!!  Chutzpah I say!!!!
