Crux of the Matter: The Content of Destroyed CIA Tapes

Most of us have heard of the missing CIA torture tapes.  You've probably called for more hearings.  You've probably even uttered things such as "obstruction of justice."

However, it turns out that there's a whole lot more going on than many of us thought.  And what we already knew was bad enough.  Over at Huffington Post, Gerald Posner has some astonishing revelations concerning the waterboarding tapes and what the CIA is really hiding (by its destruction of the tapes).

Here's the article.  And it reads like a movie thriller, except for the stunning realization that this isn't fiction.

Hayden did not disclose one of the al Qaeda suspects whose tapes were destroyed. But he did identify the other. It was Abu Zubaydah, the top ranking terror suspect when he was tracked and captured in Pakistan in 2003. In September 2006, at a press conference in which he defended American interrogation techniques, President Bush also mentioned Abu Zubaydah by name. Bush acknowledged that Zubaydah, who was wounded when captured, did not initially cooperate with his interrogators, but that eventually when he did talk, his information was, according to Bush, "quite important."

There's more:

In my 2003 New York Times bestseller, Why America Slept: The Failure to Prevent 9/11, I discussed Abu Zubaydah at length in Chapter 19, "The Interrogation." There I set forth how Zubaydah initially refused to help his American captors. Also, disclosed was how U.S. intelligence established a so-called "fake flag" operation, in which the wounded Zubaydah was transferred to Afghanistan under the ruse that he had actually been turned over to the Saudis.

Zubaydah talked.  He named Prince Ahmed and two other Saudi princes, and also the chief of Pakistan's air force, as his contacts. In addition he claimed that two of the men, the King's nephew, and the Pakistani Air Force chief, knew about 9-11 attacks before they happened.

And then, the individuals he fingered all turned up dead!  Read this chilling story at Huffington Post here.

The 9-11 commission was denied this film footage.  The government has done everything it could to cover it up.  And we are heading into, potentially, a third war against a country having nothing to do with 9-11.  When will Congressional men and women of courage hold the only hearings that mean anything?  As teacherken's signature line reads: If impeachment is off the table, so is democracy.

And CBS has a take (PM - 12/8/2007 5:48:48 PM)
From Think Progress:

'Well-Informed' Source Tells CBS That Tapes Were Destroyed To Prevent Prosecution

Last night on the CBS Evening News, national security correspondent David Martin reported that a "well-informed source" informed the network that the CIA destroyed the interrogation videos to "avoid criminal prosecution."

That may, but... (KathyinBlacksburg - 12/8/2007 6:11:32 PM)
Hi, PM:
You may be right, but covering up the source of 9-11 is potentially and considerably more explosive.  However, over at Democratic Underground, there's an entirely different take.  And this is interesting as well...
