A challenger for Drake?

The Virginian-Pilot reports that Sheriff Bob McCabe may challenge Rep. Thelma Drake in the 2nd District. He would be a competitive candidate. Personally, I would prefer Jody Wagner. Either would be preferable to Drake. She's got to go.

[UPDATE by Rob: From the article ...

Sheriff Bob McCabe said he may challenge U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake in November....

McCabe, 49, is a Navy veteran and former Norfolk police officer who was elected sheriff 15 years ago. He was elected as a Republican, with Drake's support, and still has photographs of GOP stalwarts Oliver North and George Allen in his office at the City Jail.

However, he left the GOP several years ago, saying elements of the party had become too extreme. He later joined the Democratic Party.

Next step in his GOP-rehab program -- get rid of those damn pictures!]

They're both great Dems and great people (Silence Dogood - 12/6/2007 11:01:11 AM)
I love both Jody and Bob, and they together were a big part of winning every competitive race in Hampton Roads this year.  Bob McCabe's endorsement of Ralph Northam over Rerras was clear signal to everyone in Norfolk that the city's centrists had turned on Rerras after his indefensible "feminazi" comments.

Photos of North and Allen... (dsvabeachdems - 12/6/2007 1:43:14 PM)
That's not rehab...it's exorcism.

McCabe is a good call (DanG - 12/6/2007 3:18:54 PM)
He's not Wagner, mind you.  But I certainly think he'd have a shot.

On another note, (DanG - 12/6/2007 3:28:57 PM)
McCabe would be a more conservative Democrat.  Wagner would be more along the lines of Tim Kaine/Mark Warner.  Don't get me wrong, I think both would be a vast improvement over Mark Warner.  Basically, I'd strongly support either candidate.  I think Jody may have a better chance because of her stronger connection to the Beach (70% of the district), but McCabe may try to weaken Thelma at home while still starting with a clean slate in an area that doesn't know him as well.  Either have a solid chance.  If these are our two choices, I'm very excited for our chances next year.

Vast improvement over THELMA DRAKE.

You just can't improve on Mark Warner. :)
