two comments, and I teach in MD (teacherken - 11/25/2007 9:25:25 PM)
in PG, even though I live in Arlington
there is a LOT of speculation that Mikulski will not be running again. There are some questions about her health at this point. Thus it is not surprising that people might be positioning themselves just in case. No one is going to challenge her in a primary should she decide to run again.
Shriver did not do all that well when he ran in a contested primary for the House - remember that Chris Van Hollen beat him. It is not clear to me that he has any statewide appeal. And given the track record of his cousin (Kathleen Kennedy Townsend) it is not clear that there would be large numbers of people flocking to support him.
My guess is that you might see a serious effort to organize around one African-American candidate this time. I don't think it will Mfume again. Cardin is from the Batlimore area, as is Mikulski as was Sarbanes (although he was originally from E Shore), and there will be a real push to have elsewhere. Among those who might be interested are former PG Executive Wayne Curry (who would be a bad choice), and current Lt. Gov Anthony Brown (who is a rising star and also from PG). If Al Wynn survives his primary against Donna Edwards he might be interested (although I don't think he'd play that well outside of PG). I think Ike Leggett of Montgomery County might also be interested.
I have not heard of any organized movement on behalf of anyone, if for no other reason than Mikulski has not said what she is doing. That is why Shriver making moves could also backfire on him.
I have some very connected students in my AP classes, and I might check to see what they have heard.
Peace.
Van Hollen would kick his behind. (loboforestal - 11/26/2007 3:39:19 PM)
Just like he did last time. The Bush Royal family replaced the Kennedy Royal Family 20 years ago. Shriver hasn't worked a day in his life; not the kind of experience America needs.
its more likely (Politicalhack - 11/27/2007 2:02:09 AM)
that Van Hollen runs for the Senate and Shriver runs for the House seat.
That's what I was thinking... (Tom Joad (Kevin) - 11/27/2007 9:51:31 AM)
I was there on the ground in 2002 in that district. I was a volunteer for Shriver and then Van Hollen when Shriver lost. Shriver still has a lot of support in that district. He could easily win a primary and general election with Van Hollen out of the way.
Van Hollen is an excellent choice for the Senate and he is currently being groomed for Mikulski's seat.
Frosh (GreenArrow - 11/29/2007 9:31:39 PM)
Wouldn't Brian Frosh be the successor to the VanHollen Seat. Shriver's only place is the Senate. He has Kennedy Power... I think the only reason VanHollen beat him in 2002... is that VanHollen went Negative on Shriver... and distorted he record in Annapolis. Also Dr. Ross Pierpont also slapped him around like a cat toy as well.

that will be a real donnybrook (Politicalhack - 11/27/2007 10:11:08 AM)
when that seat opens. You'll have Shriver, Susan Turnbull (Vice Chair of the DNC), maybe Jamie Raskin, maybe Brian Frosh, maybe Rob Garagiola, maybe Rich Madaleno, and maybe many more.
Mikulski isn't up in 2008 (jeisrael - 11/27/2007 11:11:02 PM)
She's up in 2010. Barring any early retirement (see Sen. Lott), it'd be a 2010 race.

she may leave early because she ... She can't be in the best health ... she grew up in Baltimore City which for all tence and purposes if it were a country it would be a 3rd world country... last good mayor the city ever had was back in the 70s William Donald Schaefer... after that the city just went down hill... Maryland needs to have moratoriume on how many people from Dundalk can represent the whole state because they all bring the Dundalk charm... (DUNDALK CHARM... no charm)
Anyone ever go to Dundalk would agree its a hell on earth and has been a hell on earth...
