Jerry Kilgore Ninth District Challenger

The rumors about what Jerry Kilgore will do following his unsuccessful gubernatorial bid have been all over the board the last few weeks. After talking to a few folks here in the Ninth District, though, his future plans are much more than speculation.
I have verified with two sources in the Ninth District that they received polling calls yesterday. The beginning of the call addressed why the person thought Kilgore lost the gubernatorial election. The second part of the call dealt with why the person thought Southwest Virginia continued to support Rick Boucher (D).
This confirms that Kilgore is looking hard at a possible run against Congressman Rick Boucher in 2006. Kilgore did have a good showing this past election cycle in the Ninth District, receiving 21,101 more votes (12.18%) than the Governor-elect, Tim Kaine.
Kilgore will have several problems in 2006, though, that he did not have this past cycle.
Here are a few:
1) Boucher is incredibly popular in the Ninth District;
2) Boucher has been in the U.S. Congress since 1983 (over 20 years);
3) Boucher served in the State Senate from 1974 ? 1983;
4) Kilgore has NEVER held a local elected office; and,
5) Kilgore just completed a very negative campaign, which he lost;
Beyond all of these reasons, though, I am pulled back to something Governor-elect Kaine often repeated on the campaign trail ? ?if it ain?t broken, why fix it??
Although some folks may not agree with his politics, Boucher?s constituent services are second to none. He says on his website that his ?constituent service offices stand ready to help with any federally-related concern, no matter the size of the problem.?
I know a lot of people take him up on that invitation too. His assistance on what would be small issues to most, but extremely important to the few involved, has earned him a reputation with voters in the Ninth District that Kilgore cannot even imagine.
For these reasons and others, the smart money will be on Boucher to be re-elected in 2006.

Shhh! Don't discoou (JC - 4/4/2006 11:29:12 PM)
Shhh! Don't discoourage him. I'd kinda like to see the Republican Party pour more good money after bad. Kilgore is such a dismal candidate, sour, standoffish, etc. that he represents an electoral black hole. If the Republicans want to pour money into that black hole then we should encourage them.
What is up with Repu (Sam Penney - 4/4/2006 11:29:12 PM)
What is up with Republicans who run negative campaigns against Tim Kaine, lose, and then run against Boucher? Sheesh.
As we say out here, (Fightin' 9th - 4/4/2006 11:29:12 PM)
As we say out here, tell Jerry to pack a lunch, 'cause it ain't gonna be an easy job.
What does a lifetime (Lowell - 4/4/2006 11:29:12 PM)
What does a lifetime politician do after he's suffered a crushing defeat? Consider a new career, perhaps? Ha, apparently not in Jerry Kilgore's case! Fortunately, Boucher will crush him. Hey, I've got an idea for Jerry: how about Scott County Registrar of Voters once his mother retires (or resigns, etc.)...seems to be a family office, right?

If there is indeed the corruption a lot of people believe exists, I hope you are right. I have heard Daugherty has been having it rough since the election. Any news to report on what he has been up to?

The Kilgores has more to worrie about besides running a race against Rick Boucher,Charlie Daugherty is having a tuff time after Jerry the lost the Governors race to Tim Kaine,no one around to grant a pardon,130+ years he is facing on voter fraud charges,my bet he is going to squeal like a little pig,then the whole family comes tumbling down.Come on Charlie give it up.
Boucher is re-electe (Neal2028 - 4/4/2006 11:29:12 PM)
Boucher is re-elected not on the merits of his liberal record (which I do appreciate), but on the service to his people.
I liked Jay Katzen. Jay Katzen is a family friend. But I didn't support him for Congress. Rick Boucher can simply do a great job. End of story.
But I do like the thought of Boucher/Kilgore. Boucher would really have a field day with it. Just because Kilgore won the 9th district against a Richmonder doesn't mean he could ever beat a legend.
This would be a clo (The Rev - 4/4/2006 11:29:12 PM)
This would be a close race,but Rick Boucher has brought to many jobs to the 9th made possible for a lot of folks to have clean drinking water and sewer to their homes,helped to many people for them to vote against him,he has been the best frind the farmers have ever had,the Duck loses.

Can someone explain to me how the Lt. Gov raise in Stafford County outdraws the Governor's race? 25K votes cast for Gov but 30K votes for Lt.Gov? Are there other localities where this occured?

I'm happy that Kaine won (Democrats rocks), but sad that Bolling and McDonnell had won. Let's cheer Byrne and Deeds, who did outstanding job and lost by very small margin.

Yeah for once I feel confident in my vote here. Two governors races in a row.
Wish I could say the same for any presidential election I've voted in since I turned 18.

Three cheers for Governor Kaine! Haven't felt this good since Bill Clinton took the White House in 1996.
Sure would like to know how much we absentee voters living overseas contributed to this victory.

Congrats to everyone at RaisingKaine, especially Lowell, whose vision and drive made it all happen.
The defeat of Dick "Baby Pesticides" Black is just...well, it's just a joyful occasion.
And, hey, Leslie may not have won. But it sure does say something that she got 40,000 MORE VOTES THAN JERRY KILGORE!!!!!
Governor Kaine. Delegate Poisson. Delegate Caputo. Delegate Marsden. Delegate Bulova. Delegate Waddell. SWEET!
Congrats to everybod (RickyD - 4/4/2006 11:29:18 PM)
Congrats to everybody for all the hard work. I remember going to Wolf Trap in August after canvassing and still wearing my Kaine/Shannon sitkcers. A guy in the crowd smuggly yells at me Kaine is going down by double digits! I ignored him and committed to working harder.
Kaine was the better man in this race and the voters have spoken.

Hey folks,
Congra (Conaway - 4/4/2006 11:29:18 PM)
Hey folks,
Congrats on the big win. This is a sea change election - 1 million+ votes for Kaine is simply incredible. Given how the statewide vote was weaving among the 3 races, this is really a sign of things to come. Republicans can't win by offering up overly-programmed, death 'n sex candidates who scream "liberal" at the top of their lungs. Otherwise, Bolling wouldn't be winning by the skin of his teeth. Democrats can win by sticking to issues and veering to the center. The Waddell win in the 68th is a sign of what Dems can do in the future - pick off moderate Republicans a la Warner and now Kaine.
Also, in NOVA, it's not that folks "turned" Republicans as much as it's that the demographic shifts due to overcharged housing prices is forcing Dem-leaning voters to the exurbs. That transportation-land use tenet was key.

Deeds can still win this. It will no doubt come down to the absentee ballots.

Hope Mark Warner can make it to. KY and neighboring TN are ripe for a GOP reversal in 2008!!
I think we can do so (Chris from ASL - 4/4/2006 11:29:40 PM)
I think we can do some good stuff in Kentucky. My old roomie is from Jackson (three hours from Brian's stomping grounds) and his family votes Democratic. Problem is that the western half of the state is republican. The republican governor ("Dirty" Ernie Fletcher) is in some serious turmoil right now as Mr. Stumbo is looking into some allegations of cronyism.
