Why even bother? (DanG - 11/10/2007 11:29:49 PM)
The race is unwinnable. Yeah, I supported Forgit, thought he had a better chance against somebody like Jost. But with Delegate Wittman taking the nomination, this race becomes insignificant and a more important race pops up...
Who will replace Delegate Wittman? That's Pollard's old seat, right? Could he be convinced to run, even when he JUST lost a close race for Senate? Get Brian Moran on the phone STAT!
Agree on the Wittman HoD seat (Lowell - 11/10/2007 11:36:42 PM)
We need to win that one, no doubt about it!
Disagree (Ron1 - 11/11/2007 12:33:52 AM)
The country is tired of the same old - same old, especially at the federal level. I don't even put much stock into the old PVI indices anymore -- the Republican party has lost at least 5%, and maybe as much as 10%, of the entire voting electorate since 2004.
VA-7 is the most problematic district for Democrats (what with Boucher controlling SW Va), but even that district is winnable in the current environment for the right person because Cantor is such a buffoon and is a nutbar.
I think VA-1 is uphill, but winnable, especially in a low turnout election. I wouldn't by any means put money on it, but it's not like we're talking about west Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Utah, or Oklahoma (the new base of the Republican party!).
You sound pretty irritated. (John Carter - 11/10/2007 9:28:42 PM)
If your attitude is widespread, the Democrats will not win in the 1st CD ever.
Forgit forgot the north (vadem2008 - 11/10/2007 9:31:57 PM)
Forgit's attitude will keep the dems from winning this year.
or...it could just be your sourgrapes (DanG - 11/10/2007 11:31:15 PM)
It SOUNDS like you're being a cry-baby because your candidate didn't win.
That's what it SOUNDS like, anyways.

Forgit about it (demdiva - 11/11/2007 12:40:14 AM)
Guess he'll need to get the Pennisula 53% All-Stars to come up here to work these precincts -- since we northerners don't know how to win campaigns and all. Hope he's right about having a magic money bag with the DCCC and DPVA too. He obviously doesn't need the peeps up here to be whipping out their fat checkbooks for him. If by some miracle he and his 53% Pennisula All-Stars manage to get him elected will he even consider us to be his constituents? Hmmmm....?
Goddamn (Craig - 11/11/2007 2:20:29 AM)
Bitter much? Jesus, you'd think someone stabbed your pet cat and laughed in your face about it.

Hmmm.... (Craig - 11/11/2007 2:21:21 AM)
Only 2 posts and no prior history? Coming on the blog to piss on Forgit maybe?
Sounds like we have one of these (Lowell - 11/11/2007 7:32:18 AM)
Nope no trolls here (demdiva - 11/11/2007 10:20:47 AM)
just some very dissed Dems who feel shocked and angry at how our nominee openly pissed on us in his speech. I was in the room when he did it. He said other insulting things but his "this seat belongs to the people of the southern peninsula" was the kicker. I even told him personally afterward that he had a lot of fence-mending to do with those of us in the expendable 47% and his response was an incredibly dismissive, "sorry you feel that way."
I've been an active DEM for longer than some of the regular RK bloggers have been alive. I've worked for DEMs in blue places, red places, given money to DEMs, traveled long distances to work on behalf of DEM candidates, and ran for office as a DEM myself. Like Bluestafford, I've never been spoken to in such an insulting way by another Democrat. We were stunned, stung and deeply offended. Then to have the peninsula peeps pile on telling us to suck it up, put up and shut up, well, it's all too much, so instead passively reading RK, I got an account and started posting.
Well, thanks for getting an account and posting (Lowell - 11/11/2007 11:13:31 AM)
So, look, I'm not from that district at all. My only interest is in winning that seat for the Democrats. I can understand how you might be hurt, annoyed, peeved, etc. But please, let's all put this behind this ASAP and unite for the short, 4-week campaign to win back this seat. Thanks.
Reality (bluestafford - 11/11/2007 8:39:34 AM)
Although I am quite hurt by the divisive speech given by Forgit at the Convention yesterday, I will still vote for him. The thing is that I cannot volunteer my time for someone that insulted all the hard work of the Northern Delegations in electing Democrats.
I slept on the way I felt yesterday and the feeling has not eased overnight. With Wittman winning the GOP nomination, Forgit will need all the help he can get from the Northern and Southern part of the district. With that said, he should put a full court press on to heal the division he has created.
Believe me, I am not alone in the way I feel about Forgit. I hope that the individual that was shooting both candidates speeches puts it up on the web soon, so everyone reading these posts realize that this is not sour grapes but reality.
Diva (Newport News Dem - 11/11/2007 12:17:05 PM)
Bitter, party of one......
go to blazes and get you whiners out of my territory and so you can cry in your respective beers!
The reality. (spotter - 11/11/2007 9:00:59 AM)
The reality is that there is an election in a month. A Democrat has been nominated through a fair democratic process. His Democratic opponent applauded his victory. That's pretty much all there is to it.
You can work for whoever you choose. You can help whoever you choose. You can sit this one out. You can vote, or not vote. You can even vote Republican, if you choose.
That's not what you're doing here, though. You're pissing all over the Democratic nominee, and directly or indirectly trying to help a Republican.
We have come a long way in turning the tide toward Democratic victories. We still have a lot of tough battles to fight. We need to stick together.
If you're really a Democrat, you will understand that. You will either move forward, or move along.
I Agree...BUT (bluestafford - 11/11/2007 9:47:20 AM)
I agree the District needs to come together. I can assure you that I am not simply the only person that feels this way.
Once the video of Forgit's speech is posted, those viewing can draw their own conclusion. I have been involved in local politics for a long time and have never been so insulted. Forgit had the opportunity to give a unifying/positive speech, but stuck a wedge between the North and South. The booing was quite loud at the Convention when this happened. The fact is that Forgit pretty much had the votes to win prior to giving the speech and this negativity was not necessary.
Given the short nature of this race and the extreme displeasure with Forgit's comments at the Convention, it will be very difficult to mend the fences with the Northern District Committees. Forgit should be traveling immediately to the Northern Delegations, if he has a chance at getting the activist support he will need in Northern part of the District.
I can also assure you that there is no truer Democrat then me! I have worked tirelessly to elect Democrats and will do so in the future! Forgit's comments were a slap in the face to all of my hard work and I simply will not smile and say everything is alright.
hmmmm (DanG - 11/11/2007 11:38:02 AM)
Part of me think that there is more to this...
If Wittman wins, that provides an open seat in the North that you guys have a shot at winning. Could it be that at least part of you wants Wittman to win so you can try to get Pollard back in his old seat?
Yeah, but (demdiva - 11/11/2007 11:57:47 AM)
didn't Pollard voluntarily give up his old delegate seat? Why would he want to get it back? Does he want it now? What has changed? I would like Albert to get back in it -- but I thought he was feeling kinda done with the House when he stepped down to make money (a reality for a regular guy with a family to support.)

Only thing worse than a cry baby (Newport News Dem - 11/11/2007 12:24:48 PM)
is one without honor who publicly says he will violate he sined oath he took yesterday.
There must be something in the water up there.
Please God, deliver me geographically based districts in 2011!
Amen (DanG - 11/11/2007 2:04:25 PM)
I don't even live in the First, and these Northies are totally pissing me off. Talk about cry babies.
So dissing the north... (Craig - 11/11/2007 12:25:23 PM)
...is all it takes to lose your vote? Boy, glad to hear you're so dedicated to the principles the Democrats stand for they you'd vote for a Republican just because the Democrat made some mean comment about your hometown. Very astute political judgement that.
Forgit (allweatherdemocrat - 11/12/2007 5:00:38 PM)
Although I am from a northern precinct, I can go out and work for Phil Forgit because I am impressed with his youth and dynamism. Will he be the first veteran of the current Iraq war to serve in Congress? I don't know, but the prospect of a young veteran to whom those presently serving can relate excites me. He says he understands the media-I hope so because it will be a short race competing with the holidays and it will take a media savvy person. He answered the one big question I had: will there be money available to compete with the Republicans? and he described his experience in running a campaign. His stickers "ready to run" spoke to me-for this encapsulated campaign we absolutely had to have someone with an organization in place-and someone who knows where the people are. Congress is composed mainly of businessmen and lawyers-I'd like to see more teachers and people who lead ordinary lives up there to give them a dose of reality.
This is an open seat-we may not get another shot at something like this for many more years. I like the fact that Phil is only forty years old and maybe he will hold this seat for the Democrats for forty years,
if he does a good job.
But most of all, if another candidate had been nominated I would support him or her with all my heart, because at the end of the day, I am a Democrat and the Democratic ideals I believe in are more important than any other factor. Maybe I'm hearing things, but as I sat in that audience I could hear President Kennedy saying "the torch has been passed to a new generation." Let's pick up that torch and light the way for all the Democrats who will be running next year.
Ready to Win (vadem2008 - 11/12/2007 5:15:31 PM)
Someone at the convention commented that it would have been better if his stickers said Ready to Win.
Good points (Ron1 - 11/12/2007 5:47:00 PM)
As for first Iraq War veteran, no, at least Patrick Murphy (PA-8) is an Iraq Army veteran, and I believe Tim Walz (MN-01) served in the national guard in Iraq as well. There may be a few others.
But your overall point is correct -- we need a lot more veterans and those that have served in the Congress.
There are a number of other Iraq and Afghanistan veterans running for Congress (including Rick Noriega for Senator in Texas) in the '08 cycle, almost all as Dems.
