Okay, fellow Virginians.  The polls are closing as I type these words.  Let's see what this long election year has wrought.  The SBE's election results page is here, and I'll be posting results and media calls as they roll in.

And, this is your election night open thread.  What did you evening voters see and hear out there?  Any predictions?  Who will be the biggest winners and losers tomorrow morning?

Let's hope for the "blueing of Virginia" to continue!

Here's a link to a page with some impt. Senate races:

tv (GAida - 11/6/2007 8:35:00 PM)
what channel is everyone tuning into in nova for coverage? I've been watching the local news channel 8.

I couldn't bring myself (emmasnacker - 11/6/2007 8:36:48 PM)
to vote for William Wampler, so I wrote in a friend. I'm sure it's the only vote she got.
On eggs here to see if Carrico got his porky butt beat. Susie Garner showed up Sat nite at the local Volunteer Fire Dept pot luck here in Podunk. I was sitting next to 3 Carrico lovers. When she came around, I shook her hand and told her I had just that afternoon been researching candidate funding. That the difference between she and Carrico was astounding. His money comes from Industry, Industry and Industry. Out of area, and out of state Corporations. Hers comes from people, people, and more people. I said I appreciated that. I said it loud enough for Bill's Bunch to have a listen.
They were real quiet after she left the table. Maybe they were thinking?

LOL (tidewater_roots - 11/6/2007 11:38:33 PM)
Hey emmasnacker..this is the same thing I do when I really have no choices in voting. When I lived in a Republican County in NJ I voted for my Dad (a Democrat) for County Clerk as there was no opposition to the Rethug Incumbent. It was the first vote I cast at 18 yo.

I'm looking at the State Board of Elections results and smiling at what I''m seeing coming out of Tidewater, especially.

Northam & Bouchard..sweet.

Kudos to all of you for your work & reporting.

tidewater_roots aka Predictor

This is.. (Terry85 - 11/6/2007 8:39:44 PM)
My first election since I moved to Arlington from Richmond and I can't believe the *lack* of coverage this is being given on the local news stations.  The stations in Richmond would always AT LEAST scroll results across the bottom of the screen.....

Lack of TV coverage (catleigh - 11/6/2007 9:36:20 PM)
always drives me crazy around here.  It's like the 'local' channels are beneath reporting elections unless it's a federal one. . .

Greetings from Yorktown, Virginia (John Carter - 11/6/2007 8:45:10 PM)
We have a very Republican area here, but we are hoping and expecting good news.

At the top of everybody's list is Senate 1--John Miller.  Expecting big things.

More difficult is Farlow/Pogge for Delegate.  Go Troy Farlow.

And we have 3 strong Supervisor candidates.  If all three come in we go from an 0-5 minority, to a 3-2 majority.

Karen Schulitz is leading (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 8:45:37 PM)
in early returns. She is actually winning in Faquier County and Winchester. I assume that Faquier is a very Republican County, so she might have a chance. SD-1 has Tricia Stall leading, but heavily Republican Poquson and a couple Newport News precincts have reported.

First interesting results (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 8:46:38 PM)
Breiner leads Smith, 52.2-47.6 w/ 12/71 precincts in.

Also, Schultz leads H-V 54.6-40.8 w/ 4/76 precincts in. More interestingly, all those boxes are from Winchester (no big surprise, I think) and Fauquier (somewhat surprising?), with no Loudoun boxes in yet.

Isn't Faquier (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 8:48:54 PM)
heavily Republican?

That was my impression, hopefully very good news (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 8:49:43 PM)

Yeah (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 8:50:31 PM)
She is running neck and neck with Vogel there. Loudoun will be a key barometer.

Loudoun is usually late reporting (sndeak - 11/6/2007 8:51:26 PM)
Diana Johnson-Price is very methodical. Loudoun is routinely one of the last counties to report.

One thing about the Stall race (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 8:51:50 PM)
is that the majority of the early precincts are from Poquson, which is a heavily Republican independent city.

Chap demolishing Devolites-Davis (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 8:54:18 PM)
in very early returns from Fairfax City.

First Pollard results (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 8:55:30 PM)
55.6 - 44.3 for Pollard, w 4 / 66 precincts in (Stuart leads 64.2 - 35.8 in Fauquier, which supports what we were discussing upthread about the Fauquier results in the Schults / H-V race being very good news for Team Blue; Pollard up big in Fredericksburg and Lancaster County).

34th Senate district early fairfax city numbers in (GAida - 11/6/2007 8:56:16 PM)
Fairfax city is obviously chap territory but here are the first numbers in the 34th SD race

Chap Petersen 1,038 62.83%

Jeannemarie Devolites Davis 611 36.98%

Tomer/Marshall -- 2/3rds counted (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 9:02:09 PM)
Adam leads by 1%, 50.45 - 49.40%, with Danville fully accounted for  and most of the boxes left from Henry County.

Anyone out there know what that might portend?

Turnout was 38.3% in Danville, not bad.

Looks like Marshall pulls it out, unfortunately (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 9:47:37 PM)
Late boxes in Danville made it closer to 50/50, and Pittsylvania County went 60/40 R. Almost a done deal, with only 5 smaller boxes left.

Mathieson up big on Welch, w/ 1/3 in (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 9:04:23 PM)
59.6 - 39.9, w/ 5 of 16 boxes in.

Fairfax County Chairman Race early early numbers (GAida - 11/6/2007 9:16:57 PM)
Connolly 60%
Baise 35%

1 precinct reporting

I will call the 1st Senatorial District (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 9:22:40 PM)
Hampton City has yet to report. That independent city is heavily Democratic. There are only a few pro-Stall precincts left out in York County and Poquson. If Miller holds on in Newport News and dominates Hampton then he should win.

I am also calling the 6th for Northram (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 9:28:02 PM)
because his lead in Norfolk is larger than Rerras's lead in Accomack. He is also carrying the VA Beach part. I believe that there are just enough votes in Norfolk and Northampton counties to overcome the Accomack margin.

lol (GAida - 11/6/2007 9:28:08 PM)
I just thought I'd point out that with 2 precints reporting Linda Smyth is losing 17 votes to 0 so far to write ins.

as for the 34th senate heres the latest

Chap Petersen 62%

Devolites Davis 38%

and thats with some numbers from fairfax county in as well. 5 out of 47 reporting in

Hollaz from James City (FlipYrWhig - 11/6/2007 9:30:12 PM)
Almost an entirely uncontested ballot for us; looking forward to seeing some drama elsewhere.

more 34th sd numbers (GAida - 11/6/2007 9:36:50 PM)
15% reporting in

Petersen 61%
Devolites 39%

34th Chap still up 61% to 39% with 19% reporting (PM - 11/6/2007 9:50:53 PM)

Bobby Mathieson (VA Breeze - 11/6/2007 9:38:12 PM)
HAS WON!!!

HD 67, Cooch (PM - 11/6/2007 9:47:52 PM)
Two precincts reporting in HD67, Caputo over Cadin 55-45%, Cooch and Janet in a dead heat.

Stolle up by 66 votes with two precincts left... (Johnny Longtorso - 11/6/2007 9:51:19 PM)
Last two precincts are Old Donation (Kaine won it by 7 votes) and Shell (Kaine won 61-36), so it's probably headed for a recount.

Correction: 22 votes with 2 precincts left. (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 9:56:45 PM)

One is the absentee precinct... (Johnny Longtorso - 11/6/2007 9:58:04 PM)
and the other is Shell. Looks good for Bouchard.

I did a lot of canvassing in Shell... (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 10:00:55 PM)
and even the Republicans liked Joe.

Shell in... (Johnny Longtorso - 11/6/2007 10:05:23 PM)
Bouchard jumps into a 156-vote lead! Woohoo, TWO Democrats representing the Beach!

Bouchard Wins? (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 10:05:25 PM)
Last box makes it 4720 - 4564, a huge jump.

Vogel has 1,000 vote lead with 55% reporting (PM - 11/6/2007 10:02:29 PM)
14,107 to 13,170

Vogel leading, but all of Loudoun is still out (justicat - 11/6/2007 10:14:37 PM)
no votes in yet from Loudoun, and voting there should be in the 14,000 total range, with some very contested races there bringing out a good turnout.  I think it will close, though maybe not enough.

-justicat

Everything in except for Loudoun now. (counter - 11/6/2007 10:31:28 PM)
Schultz needs 1,810 votes, that is very doable.

Doable, but you are talking the rural western portion of Loudoun... (justicat - 11/6/2007 10:38:12 PM)
which tends quite a bit more Republican.

Turnout in Winchester dissapointing from the results that are in--% was fine, just could have used in the upper 40's.

-justicat

I think she's done. (thegools - 11/6/2007 11:37:13 PM)
1800 is a lot of people and I would estimate that only about 18000 votes will come in from Loudoun. That would require Schultz to win by a 10% margin.  Possible but unlikely. Of course I thought Webb had lost when I watched the returns last year at 10:30pm. Then Webb won, so what do I know?

Dale Evans leads 51%-46% in Fx w/ 13% reporting (PM - 11/6/2007 10:05:38 PM)
This is the Clerk of Courts race

Connolly up 61-33% over Baise with 13% reporting (PM - 11/6/2007 10:08:02 PM)
This is the Fx Chair race

fairfax races (GAida - 11/6/2007 10:08:52 PM)
34th SD
30% Reporting in

Petersen 60%
Devolites 40%

FC Chairman
15% Reporting

Connolly 61%
Baise 33%

In a race that will interest Webb supporters, Little Jen is leading (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 10:22:18 PM)
Jennifer M. "Jen" Little is leading the race for School Board Member in Mathews County.

Not only was she instrumental in the Webb campaign, she has significantly influenced the vote for Ralph Northam in the 6th Senate District.

Go Little Jen!!!

HD-68 About 100% Probable Republican Pickup (norman swingvoter - 11/6/2007 10:22:26 PM)
Loupassi, Republican, carried Chesterfield County by 23%.  With only 2 precincts left to report in Richmond, I can't see any way that our Independent Waddell can win.

Updates for Cuccinelli-Oleszek, Barker-O'Brien (Craig - 11/6/2007 10:22:32 PM)
Oleszek takes the lead over Cuccinelli (51-47) with 10.25% reporting.

Barker closing in on O'Brien (50-49) with 14.63% reporting.

Cuccinelli-Oleszek (counter - 11/6/2007 10:26:09 PM)
The early results look good for Oleszek, running about 5% ahead of the 2003 Dem candidate in the precincts that have reported.

Machine trouble?? Check Springfield Supervisor (catleigh - 11/6/2007 10:23:35 PM)
Ok, I hate to say this, because I'm a McClanahan supporter, but something weird is going on in the Springfield Supervisor's race.  Two precincts have reported, two of the most heavily Republican precincts in the district, and not a single vote for the Republican 'legacy' candidate Pat Herrity?  In my dreams, maybe.  But that can't be right . . .

One precinct left...... (USCKB - 11/6/2007 10:23:42 PM)
Bouchard 4,720  50.80%
Stolle  4,564  49.12%

Only absentees left (VA Breeze - 11/6/2007 10:39:35 PM)
so looks good for Joe!

Update on Hugo-Simmons (Craig - 11/6/2007 10:24:51 PM)
Only 7% reporting, but Simmons has amazing 18-point lead on Hugo.

HD-86 Donahue up over Rust by 1% with 3/18 reporting (PM - 11/6/2007 10:29:59 PM)
This would be a Dem pickup if Donahue were to win

Fairfax County Constitutional Officers (Craig - 11/6/2007 10:30:47 PM)
Evans (D) edging out Frey (R) 51-45% with 21% reporting.

Morrogh (D) beating McDade (R) 55-44% with 21% reporting.

Barker pulls ahead of O'Brien (Craig - 11/6/2007 10:38:51 PM)
Barker now at 50, O'Brien now at 49 with 22% in

17 of 17 precincts and Bouchard wins! (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 10:39:46 PM)

englin wins lyles crouch precint by ten pts (pvogel - 11/6/2007 10:41:41 PM)
An Amazing result.

The victory party in  alexandria was sweet!!!!!

Red to Much Bluer So Far! (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 10:44:14 PM)
We are doing very well.  Wish Barker would win too. What a fine candidate.  What a night overall.  More to come.

Senate (USCKB - 11/6/2007 10:45:56 PM)
Race updates

VA 1 - 51.54 to 48.46 Dem (88.09%)
VA 6 - 53.62 to 46.38 Dem (81.03%)
VA 15 - 41.02 to 58.98 Rep (61.94%)
VA 27 - 47.47 to 52.53 Rep (73.13%)
VA 28 - 49.13 to 50.87 Rep (66.66%)
VA 34 - 58.92% to 41.08% Dem (38.29%)
VA 37 - 51.85% to 48.15% (10.25%)
VA 39 - 50.69% to 49.31% (21.95%)

Sorry for no names.

Percentage of the vote needed (USCKB - 11/6/2007 10:48:11 PM)
If all things were equal in precincts (a faulty assumption, I know, but the best we can do), here are the following vote percentage (not chances of winning) needed by each of our candidates: remember, in this scenario, lower is better:

1 - 41.73%
6 - 34.04%
15 - 75.45%
27 - 61.76%
28 - 54.62%
34 - 36.85%
37 - 48.99%
39 - 50.25%

Judging by these numbers, I'll go out and say we'll split the bottom two and get our four (1st, 6th, 34th, and 37 / 39)

2:4 Senate Seats? (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 10:46:44 PM)
So we have Chap and Miller.  We need 2 more folks!??

Assuredly, Ralph Northam has won... (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 10:53:55 PM)
One of the finest human beings I have had the pleasure to come across.

Democrats will capture the VA Senate (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 10:47:44 PM)
I'm calling it now. I am ready to make the key projection.

I'm ready to call the 39th for George Barker. Barker is leading the Fairfax County part of the district approximately 59-41. O'Brien is winning the Prince William County part of the district 56-43. At the beginning of the night O'Brien had a 60-40 lead in the Prince William County part of the district. Assuming that the current pattern holds there just aren't enough votes for O'Brien to make up to win.

In the 37th, as I've heard that Cucincelli is underperforming in that district's GOP strongholds, I think that he may lose. Still too close to call there.

Assuming that Colgan can hold on in the 29th, given that he won Manassas and Manasass Park City, the most anti-immigrant part so the district, he is probably headed to victory.

Agreed..... (USCKB - 11/6/2007 10:53:33 PM)
Northam is a shoe-in.  One is in hand.  For some reason, can't completely sell myself that Miller is in the bag.

Miller has it (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 10:55:42 PM)
only 4 precincts left there and they are all in Hampton, which is heavily Democratic.

Delegate Paula Miller (D) defeats Hank Giffin III in the 87th (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 10:48:28 PM)
5244 to 4444.

Chap, Miller and Northam 3 of 4 (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 10:50:38 PM)
Who will be the 4th Senate seat FOR VICTORY?

Probably (jiacinto - 11/6/2007 10:52:23 PM)
Barker and/or Olsezk.

Oleszek is still looking good with 9 of 39 precints reporting (counter - 11/6/2007 11:03:44 PM)
Still have to see what kind of margins Cuccinelli gets from the big Republican precints though.

Majority Report (vote-left - 11/6/2007 10:51:58 PM)
Of the 40 Senate Districts, Democrats are currently leading in 23, Republicans 17

Colgan is winning too. (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 10:57:47 PM)
Hold onto that seat sir!

Miller defeats Stall in the 1st (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 10:57:35 PM)
15469 to 14747

Oleszek and Barker! Come on! (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 11:00:12 PM)
Janet and George we are rooting for you!

Vanderhye slips! 4:19 in (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 11:02:19 PM)
Come on Marg!

6 races open..... (USCKB - 11/6/2007 11:02:53 PM)
1, 27, 28, 34, 37, and 39

We are leading 19-15.  Two to go.

drat (USCKB - 11/6/2007 11:04:10 PM)
Pollard down 51.36% to 48.64% w/ 91% reporting.

VA-28 is gone.

Looks like Pollard loses (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 11:05:15 PM)
Stafford just came in hard in the final boxes, Pollard behind by about 1070 votes with very few boxes left.

Stafford was a wasteland for Dems tonight. Something to think about for the 1st CD Special in December.

Oops (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 11:09:21 PM)
Meant to say: Fauquier was a wasteland tonight, and a great portion of CD-1 is in Fauquier/Stafford.

We're probably better off nominating someone from Williamsburg/Hampton (Forgit) and hoping for good turnout from the machine down there.

Rob has started a new thread (dsvabeachdems - 11/6/2007 11:09:59 PM)
Suggest we move on over so we can all be one one sheet of music.

Janet and George Too Close (kevinceckowski - 11/6/2007 11:16:12 PM)
I hope they both win....very close!

fox 5 coverage (GAida - 11/6/2007 11:25:02 PM)
I'm watching fox 5 coverage. They showed where JMDD is at. she was huddled over a table looking at a laptop with a less than happy face.

it was hilarious

anyone else watch? they had a pretty bad picture of Chap when they showed some pics. And when they originally showed the numbers they the wrong picture for chap! it was some other guy! ha ha whats up with that?

anyways looking good for chap!

Miller wins... (lgb30856 - 11/6/2007 11:36:31 PM)
thanks to all the people who helped at the polls in the newport news precincts. you are the best.
