Who are you voting for tomorrow ... and why?

Okay, we've all seen the names on the signs.  Unknown people running for unknown offices.  So, help your fellow progressives out.  Who are the progressive choices for whom you'll be pulling the lever in any and all races -- school boards, sheriffs, commonwealth's attorneys, you name it.

Think of this as your open "community-based progressive voters guide" thread.

In my uncompetitive Virginia Beach precinct... (Johnny Longtorso - 11/5/2007 11:41:28 PM)
I'm voting for Bob MacIver in the 83rd House district. I don't know much about him, but I can't stand Bob Purkey, who does absolutely nothing, except when he puts up some campaign signs about a month before election day. I've never gotten a single piece of mail from Purkey, nor do I ever see him in the news, except for that horrific "health care" bill he proposed.

In the 8th Senate district, I'm writing in Eileen Levandoski, after taking several minutes to memorize her last name.

That should be 82nd, not 83rd. (Johnny Longtorso - 11/5/2007 11:42:07 PM)

That's a handy write-in (elevandoski - 11/6/2007 1:18:12 AM)
for the 81st House race as well!  Thanks, Johnny!

Newgate Precinct (Ambivalent Mumblings - 11/5/2007 11:47:02 PM)
I'm out in the Newgate Precinct and the big race I'm going to voting in and watching is the 39th Senate. I'm voting for Barker because primarily because he has a vast amount of experience working to improve our health care industry and has also spent a great deal of time serving in various forums to help address our transportation issues.

Besides the county wide positions which I'm voting straight Democrat for and George Barker for Senate, I'm also voting for Mike McClanahan (Springfield District Supervisor) and Ramona Morrow (School Board) who are Democratic candidates.

In Fairfax City here... (Craig - 11/5/2007 11:54:26 PM)
Chap Petersen for State Senate (Devolites Davis is a creep), Dave Bulova for Delegate (he's unopposed, but I've always liked him), Dale Evans for Clerk of the Court (Because we need a Clerk who'll make a real effort not to fail his audits), and Ray Morrogh for Commonwealth Atty (because having worked as a paralegal, I can tell you McDade doesn't know what he's talking about).

Pretty easy here (Ron1 - 11/6/2007 1:18:29 AM)
Ticer for Senate, Englin for Delegate.

For whatever strange reason, there appear to be alot more Mark Allen for Delegate signs around Old Town than Englin signs. Hope that doesn't portend anything -- I suspect most Alexandrians will see the (D) by David's name and vote appropriately.

I'm voting for... (mikeporter - 11/6/2007 1:52:06 AM)
Bobby Mathieson in the 21st district of Virginia Beach.  He was a public servant as a police officer for almost 30 years and is in favor of repealing the abusive driver fees.

In Fairfax County (OrangeFish - 11/6/2007 3:41:31 AM)
Voting for Vivian Watts for Delegate (I just adore her!), Sharon Bulova for Supervisor, Tina Hone and Ilryong Moon for At-Large seats on the School Board.

My District is Pretty Noncompetitive (Luna - 11/6/2007 5:31:35 AM)
Both the candidates for House (Ken Plum, District 36) and Senate (Janet Howell, District 32) are running unopposed. But I'm voting for Cathy Hudgins for Supervisor and Gerry Connoly for Chairman.

Prince William County here (snolan - 11/6/2007 5:56:00 AM)
I grudgingly give my vote to Charles Colgan, last of the dixie Democrats because his opponent is far, far worse.  They used to say Ollie North was the only man who could get Chuck Robb re-elected that last time; well FitzSimmonds is the man who will get Colgan re-elected one last time.

I joyously vote for Bruce Roemmelt and and spending the day volunteering for his campaign.  Tossing Marshall out of office by a large enough margin that he cannot come back will be the sweetest victory for Virginia in a long time, surpassing even the sweetness of tossing Dick Black out in 2005.

Bill Ryland is the only candidate qualified in the Clerk of Court race, easy choice.

I'll probably vote for Ebert for Commonwealth's Attorney even though he is unopposed.

It looks like I will actually vote Republican for Glendall Hill for Sheriff.  He appears to be a good sheriff, vocused on fighting crime and not focused on politics; his independent opponent has run for too many different and unrelated offices.

All three volunteers to fill the three open soil and water conservation posts are awesome, they all get approval from me, and they are effectively unopposed.

Sharon Pandak is an interesting, strong willed, articulate, and precise legal expert.  She has integrity, she gets my vote for BoCS Chair.  Her opponent is dishonest, manipulative, and obstreperous; he should not be allowed to run for office in any capacity again.

John Stirrup is well liked in my neighborhood, but he's been entirely too ready to back Stewart's hair-brained fear mongering from behind the throne.  I see a rat in Stirrup and will vote for Corey Riley, a hard-working Democrat focused on the real issues and not on grandstanding.

I have no children, and the school board choices I'd get are unopposed anyway.

So that makes for an almost clean Democratic ticket even though I carefully select each candidate on their own merit.

Outside my district I will be watching Janet Oleszek, Karen Schultz, and Jeanette Rishell races most closely.

How sweet would a victory party be the year both Cuccinelli and Marshall are tossed out, and Vogel is prevented from getting in?

I'll be voting for (Ingrid - 11/6/2007 7:49:23 AM)
Patsy Ticer, Adam Ebbin, Paul Ferguson, Beth Arthur, Mary Hynes, etc...etc..., because this is Arlington.  Oh, and for myself... :-)

Ingrid's comment regarding the "progressives" in Arlington (JJ2003 - 11/6/2007 11:05:23 AM)
Ingrid said, "I'll be voting for Patsy Ticer, Adam Ebbin, Paul Ferguson, Beth Arthur, Mary Hynes, etc...etc..., because this is Arlington.  Oh, and for myself... :-)"

I have Mary Margaret and Al Eisenberg, but as far as the others, I would drop Mary Hynes and insert Walter Tejada and Josh Ruebner.  We were asked for the "progressives" in Arlington--that's not quite the same as "Democrats".

Hynes lost me with her "mediation" of the First Baptist dispute.  Simply giving voice to the neighbors suing the County gave them a real dose of "credibility" as they carried forth the fight, the struggle, the quest to stop "those people" from casting shadows on Lyon Village and ruining people's gardens.  Ruebner is not as experienced, but he'll learn and he'll walk the Progressive walk.  When he sees certain well-known individuals walk into the County Board room and ask for concessions, he'll be sensible enough to know if they're on one side, he's on the other.

In Richmond (cbd - 11/6/2007 4:54:50 PM)
Senate 10: John Watkins was un-opposed. There could certainly be worse Repubs but I would have preferred that he have some competition.

House 68: I had to ignore questionable endorsements from my Governor & former Gov to pull the lever for Manoli Loupassi. Sure, he's using the Repub playbook soundbites to turn out the base but people in Richmond know Manoli as a reasonable, common sense city councilman. After Doug Wilder became our "strong mayor" Manoli was unanimously elected as the first City Council president by a council with 7 out of 9 Dems. And the truth is Kathryn Waddell is a life-long Repub who only became an independent to run against Brad Marrs in 05.

At the top of my list (VaNative - 11/6/2007 6:57:11 PM)
Chuck Colgan, and not grudgingly like Scott upthread.  I vote for Chuck because he is one of the most honorable politicians I have known - and more often than not that can be an oxymoron.  Do I agree with him on everything? Absolutely not.  I am, however, proud to have him represent me and hope that the voters recognize how much he has done - and will continue to do - for not only our district, but all of NoVa.
