"-+Es ahora o nunca?"

From the latest Washington Hispanic:

"Desde el condado de Prince William hasta la ciudad de Gaithersburg debemos enfrentar a los candidatos que promulgan pol+ˇticas antiinmigrantes. Es ahora o nunca que debemos demostrar con nuevos votos nuestro repudio a los que est+ín da+¦ando a nuestra comunidad Latina", se+¦al+¦ la delegada Ana Sol Guti+¬rrez.

My translation, with the help of Google Translate:

From Prince William County to the city of Gaithersburg we must counter those candidates who promulgate anti-immigrant policies. It is now or never that we must demonstrate with our votes our repudiation of those who are damaging our Latino community," stated Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez.

Is it really now or never?  Maybe, although something tells me that the anti-immigrant forces could win in the short run, but lose big time in the long run. In other words, the illegal immigration issue may win seats on the Prince William county board this year (or not), but it's almost certain that hundreds of thousands of immigrants will be voting Democratic for generations to come.

Even Rove sees the writing on the wall (TheGreenMiles - 11/5/2007 10:32:30 PM)
Karl Rove knows that just like the civil rights movement locked up the African American vote, today's immigration battle could decide the Hispanic vote for decades (or more).  That's why he got Bush behind moderate immigration solutions, only to be thwarted by his party's xenophobes, protectionists, and just plain racists.

Republicans may win the battle in Prince William County tomorrow, but they're doomed to lose the war not just there, but across the state and around the country.  The Hispanic vote may turn swing states like AZ, CO, NM, NV, and FL from purple to solidly blue.

Whatever else Rove is... (Lowell - 11/5/2007 10:40:54 PM)
...he's smart politically.

It's true (Craig - 11/5/2007 10:41:39 PM)
Hell, even Ed Gillespie warned the GOP not to be seduced by, as he called it, "the siren song of illegal immigration," warning that it would turn off hispanics tot eh Republicans for decades; that it would "do for the nation what Prop 187 did for California."

Exactly right. (Pain - 11/6/2007 1:35:09 PM)
Stewart et al may very well win today, but they will lose in the long run, and the supporters are too narrow-minded or shortsighted to see what's coming.
