Who thinks America is Great?

I was recently forwarded an email from Sam Rasoul (who is runing for the 6th disrict congressman seat in Virginia) that makes me question how "wonderful" our nation really is. The email was orginally from a local teacher pleading for help because one of her students is very ill and the student's middle class family can't afford to pay the large medical bills. To make problems worse the student's mother also has diabetes and cardiac problems. The teacher has forked up money out of her own pocker to help and is spending a lot of time and engery doing what ever else she can. She could be doing her job and educating our future generations but instead she is being the helpping hand our gov't should be. How can we call ourselves great or even a superpower when our children can't receive adequate healthcare?
If you can help in any way please contact: Sherry Stanley at sherrystanley@verizon.net. Thanks.

That was a touching story. We have to do something about our healthcare crisis. Locally, I believe Dr. Breiner will help!
Some Americans are Great (Matt H - 11/2/2007 7:25:46 PM)
Like the teacher, and for that matter, most teachers. As a country, I could name a dozen countries that have a better overall standard of living, and more opportunity for all regardless of one's parents.
The Politicians say were are great because they feel the electorate hates to know truth - it's a shame since it prevents us from aiming to do better.
America is great (Mitch - 11/2/2007 10:31:33 PM)
America is great. Though our government doesn't do its part and we don't have guaranteed health care (yet), this is a great country, and I think the American people will demand - and get - a health care system that provides for everyone.
How appalling that a middle class American family (Catzmaw - 11/4/2007 3:34:52 PM)
is reduced to beggary in order to provide necessary care for its children. This is indeed a great country, but for too long we have bought the line that we are a country of rugged individualists except when it comes to awarding corporate welfare, agricultural subsidies, and tax cuts for rich people. As soon as it becomes about helping out the middle class all we hear from our current administration is the offer of a tax deduction for people who barely even qualify to pay taxes and a suggestion that those in trouble seek charity.
