It's down to the wire in Herndon/Chantilly/Sterling VA-86. In a race that was below the radar for quite some time, Jay Donahue has shown the knowledge, intelligence, class, and ability to listen that we need in the state Assembly.
Although some perceived this race, at the beginning, as merely "putting up some opposition" to the well known incumbent, as time went on, in venues such as that pictured here, Jay has shown himself to have a firm grasp of the issues, enthusiasm, and energy to make a valuable contribution to Governor Kaine's agenda for the state, and for northern Virginia in particular.
At the pictured "meet and greet" at my place, Jay spent two hours chatting, speaking, and answering detailed questions on issues ranging from the environment to transportation. Attendees included a young man whom we registered to vote who had just received his voter card that day, and his father who has recently applied for citizenship, just in time to help us vote in a Democratic President next year, in addition to others who will now be highly motivated to come out and vote in this low turnout critical election.
I was impressed particularly by Jay's in depth knowledge of local environmental issues, not usually at the top of local debate. He responded in detail to questions regarding Runnymede park's streambed erosion, and advocated reforms such as getting rid of that quaint custom which allows a subcommittee to prevent a vote on a bill without a recorded vote.
Of course, Jay would not be nearly where he is today without the kind cooperation of Tom Rust, who authored the most talked about legislation in Virginia, the so-called "abusive driver fee" law...I am amused by his latest mailing which says, in gross understatement: "The bill is not perfect." Hey, great observation!
I'm told that the 86th is the most Democratic district still represented by a Republican. We can't afford to have someone who supports the Republican caucus represent our district. Jay has knocked on thousands of doors, met with constituents day and night, and has enunciated a forward looking, thoughtful plan to slow down irresponsible development, promote open spaces, and encourage cooperation among local governments.
Finally, Jay is proud to be a Democrat, and has made his affiliation clear, whereas it is interesting to note that Tom Rust's yard signs do not mention his political affiliation, and, in fact, are blue. Hmmm.
The State Committee has really stepped up to the plate with a veritable flood of excellent mailings. Can you also help put Jay over the top in this last week? If you can, get in touch with jaydonahuefordelegate.com to volunteer and/or contribute here: https://secure.actbl...
So Lowell puts this race in the "leaning Republican, possible upset" category at 40-45%. I would say, based on the inherent advantages of incumbents, that assessment is probably accurate - which means that GOTV efforts are critical, as are last minute mailings and advertising. The hot button issue is in play, which gives us an excellent chance of success, not to mention Jay's tireless efforts. Let's do it!
Is this carrying political correctness too far?
