(Update: 1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T Colbert has now exceeded 1.25 M members.)

8 1/2 days ago a Facebook group started in honor of Stephen Colbert's "Presidential Campaign." Just 1 day after he announced his intention to run for the nomination, but only in South Carolina, and for either party, a fan started a group called 1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T. Colbert (link here - but you have to be a Facebook member).

The group was a knock off of the very successful "One Million Strong for Barack" (link here - again, Facebook members). In a few months, they've managed to gain the support of almost 400,000 Facebookers. No bad, right? That's a lot of support.

This morning, 1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T. Colbert passed 1,000,000 members. That's right, in just over a week, 1,000,000 people did something, anything. I don't care what it is, that's truly amazing.

Here's why you should care...
Colbert isn't a real candidate. This is a joke to sell books and promote his show (a darn funny show that I watch every night). Still, it has to be a joke because, as pointed out on DailyKos today and for the last week, his campaign is probably violating multiple FEC laws.

I've often criticized Facebook for being pointless. But while perusing the Colbert group today (yes, I joined), something caught my eye.

*** VOTER REGISTRATION INFORMATION ********

If you are not yet registered to vote, and are 18(or will be before the election), then register now!

http://www.rockthevo...

Over 2,130 have registered to vote through this group! Lets make sure that everyone that is eligible to vote does so.

Now this is value! One million people, mostly college students who are notorius for not voting, joined this group, and already more than 2,000 of them have registered to vote. I find this truly amazing, and uplifting. Celebrity and viral entertainment usually serve no prupose. But if a group like this can register new voters en masse, then I'm all for it.

Perhaps there's hope yet for young America!
