Gerry Connolly Says He Won't "Demagogue" Immigration Issue

According to the Washington Post, Fairfax County board chairman Gerry Connolly said last night that he would not "demagogue" the immigration like "some of our neighbors."
We're not going to demagogue. We're not going to essentially roll back the welcome mat. . . . That's not why I ran for office and that isn't who we are, and we're not going to do that.
Which "neighbors" was Connolly talking about? According to the Post, "it seemed clear he was referring to Prince William Board Chairman Corey A. Stewart (R), who has made the illegal-immigrant crackdown a centerpiece of his reelection campaign." Good for Gerry Connolly; I just wish more politicians and citizens would speak out against Corey Stewart's harsh, divisive, self-destructive policies. I also strongly urge voters to replace Stewart with Sharon Pandak -- a leader who will bring Prince William county together, not tear it apart -- in 14 days.
P.S. The Pilot Online has a great editorial today, "A crude weapon in immigration fight," which concludes, "Amid screams and curses and street skirmishes, it is hard to find any improvement in the quality of life for Prince William County residents." Hear hear!

Warming Up... (Doug in Mount Vernon - 10/23/2007 12:44:39 PM)
To Gerry Connolly. I've NEVER been a fan of the "big boss" style of politics that Gerry seems to be often identified with. However, I have always respected that I tend to agree with Gerry on most issues, and so I've supported him and voted for him.
With his recent remarks on this issue, I am really beginning to warm up to Gerry. Good for him, and as a Fairfax county resident, taxpayer, and voter, I thank him for saying what's needed to be said about this issue.
I am proud of Fairfax and Gerry Connolly today.
Now, if he'd just give some of his $1 million war chest (Lowell - 10/23/2007 12:50:58 PM)
to Chap, George, Janet, and other fellow Democrats, I'd start warming up to him as well.

Lowell....way to go. The Big Machine could afford to give some away. Don't worry there is more to flow into his campaign pot as the the task force gets closer and closer to supporting huge, huge land use density in Tysons Corner. Does 130,000,000 sq feet of development mean anything to you? Tysons, you know the place where Gerry's donors own land. As they make their hundreds of millions, you and I will be picking up those pennies on the street to use to pay for the tolls and taxes.
I'll take him over any GOPer (Craig - 10/24/2007 12:56:57 AM)
Seriously, does anyone think that the GOP wouldn't develop the hell out of, well, anywhere? Like it or not, Fairfax County is pretty much high-density nowadays, that's why all the meaningful discussions about limiting growth are in Prince William and Loudoun.
And I seriously have to ask, why does everyone act like Connolly's faults (and I admit he has many) make him as bad as a Republican? Jesus, you'd think he was eating babies the way NLS talks.

What did Connolly say that really warmed you up to him?
Just curious.
Baise hits bottom (jsrutstein - 10/23/2007 7:41:04 PM)
I just got robo-called from Baise. In the few seconds before I hung up, I heard him say "don't waste your vote. Connolly won't promise to serve a full-term." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Same msg as Baise's push poll (Eric - 10/23/2007 8:25:32 PM)
Looks like the only thing for Baise to run on is the fact that Connolly has eyes for Davis' seat in the House. So essentially Baise's campaign boils down to this: "If you elect me I'll serve the whole term". Now that's a reason to elect someone if I ever heard one. **rolls eyes**
Didn't work for Willkie (Craig - 10/23/2007 9:41:59 PM)
The "He's been in too long and won't promise not to run again" line didn't generate many votes in 1940, and I doubt it's gotten any better with age.
