"Yesterday, the Republican Party chose to support George Bush instead of the 137,000 children in Virginia who already benefit from SCHIP and thousands more who could in the future. Those members of Congress who voted to uphold the President's veto should be held accountable for standing in the way of the health and well-being of millions of children nationwide. Today's vote makes crystal clear the misguided priorities of the President and the Republican Party. Rather than providing access to health care for low income children, House Republicans chose to provide support for a failed President and a bankrupt ideological agenda.
"Our representatives in Washington ought to be fighting to improve the lives of hard-working Americans who are trying to provide for their families, not rubber-stamping President Bush's shameful policies. I was deeply disappointed in President Bush's veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, but I am outraged by the failure of House Republicans to step up and do the right thing today and override the President's veto. I've been fighting for affordable health care for over 30 years, and next year when I'm elected to Congress I plan to lead that fight on Capitol Hill."
FAMIS (JScott - 10/20/2007 1:07:59 PM)
It was my understanding that there were 47,770 children under the age of 19 enrolled in FAMIS SCHIP portion or 11% of the total enrollment of the program. 8% is from the Medicaid expansion for children under 19 resulting in 19% total for the SCHIP portion. The other 80% is from FAMIS Plus children under 21 (FAMIS PLUS is Va's name for childrens medicaid)Total children in VA for both programs is 427,650 as of 10-01-07.
SCHIP will be passed regardless of the overide, but bhoth sides have to get back to working out the limits and reach a reasonable compromise. Its sad that this is one I felt could have been one where Pelosi and Reid could have demonstrated a willingness to work it out and compromise and demonstrate that it IS the Democrats who will get the necessary legislation passed to benefit the country and show the country that they are the party willing to put partisanship aside to get bills passed because they are important regardless of the baffons on the other sides agenda.
great rhetoric, but... (jeffdav - 10/22/2007 11:07:48 AM)
Wolf voted in favor of the S-CHIP re-authorization and the veto override, unfortunately.
Right, but he had voted against it earlier (Lowell - 10/22/2007 12:34:19 PM)
In other words, Wolf was against SCHIP before he was for it. More to the point, he was against it until Judy Feder started hammering him on the issue.
