Karl Rove. Gone, But Not Forgotten

If you're a minority in the Republican Party, you're a rock star. Who got invited to speak at the '04 GOP Convention, Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R-MD) or Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R-MD)? (Don't ever let a Republican tell you they're against affirmative action) But when you're a Democrat and a minority, especially in the south (or the Alabama region of VA, as Tom Davis would call it), it's just a matter of time before someone plays the race card. Del. Mark Cole's (R-88) most recent mailer features a grainy, darkened picture of his Cuban-American opponent, Carlos Del Toro. And does anyone doubt that the decision to attack Cmdr. Del Toro on illegal immigration wasn't already made the moment Cole found out what his opponent's ethnicity was? Please. I guess these so-called "commie-hating" right-wingnuts would be happier if the Del Toro family were still living under Fidel Castro.
Another example of Karl Rove-style politics in the 88th? Why they're going after Del Toro's status as a veteran, of course. Apparently Republicans have a problem with Del Toro using his rank of "Commander" in various campaign signs and literature. When someone's a military officer, and put in command of a billion dollar, state-of-the-art Navy Destroyer, just after 9/11, I show that person the respect they deserve and have earned. But that's just me. After all, when Republicans say they "support the troops" it doesn't apply if there's a (D) next to your name. Hey, sign me up for the Draft Mr. Peter Pace for Senate campaign.
