Hispanos con Kaine

For Virginians of Hispanic heritage, Tim Kaine is definitely the best choice for governor this November.  Why do we say this?  Let us count the ways...

  • Like many Hispanics, Tim Kaine is a deeply religious Roman Catholic who believes strongly in the teachings of the Church.  Kaine personally opposes abortion and the death penalty, but at the same time believes firmly in upholding the U.S. constitution, as interpreted by the Supreme Court.
  • Tim Kaine is fluent in Spanish, but even more importantly, he truly understands the Hispanic community.  Kaine gained this understanding firsthand, having served as a missionary in Honduras from September 1980 until May1981. During that time, Kaine lived with Jesuit missionaries and ran a small vocational school, teaching teenagers religion, welding and carpentry skills.
  • In Honduras, Kaine put into practice his belief that faith must be combined with "good works."  Today, Tim still believes in the power of religion to inspire good in peoples' lives.  Tim says, "I hope to share with...all of our children first-hand the life-changing experience I had in Honduras, and the important lessons about serving others that I learned there."

  • Prior to becoming Lt. Governor, Tim Kaine worked as a civil rights lawyer, specializing in housing discrimination issues.  Among other accomplishments, Kaine won the largest fair housing case in American history.  For his work, Kaine received awards from the "National Fair Housing Alliance" and  the group, "Lawyers for Public Justice."
  • As mayor of Richmond, Tim Kaine proved that he is a uniter of people who believes in opportunity for all.  The way Kaine puts it is  as follows:

Lo m?s importante es crear un ambiente en donde hay oportunidades para todos que viven en nuestro estado....Espero que trabajemos juntos para poder lograr el mejor futuro para nosotros y nuestros hijos.
  • We hope you will support Tim Kaine in the months ahead, and tell your friends and family:  Tim Kaine is a true friend of Hispanics, and will make a great governor of Virginia.

      Muchas gracias por su apoyo!

Dear "hispanos" con (ZC PUEDE - 4/4/2006 11:26:09 PM)
    Dear "hispanos" con Kaine Blog:

This site seems really great I just wish the name could change to Latinos for Kaine...I just feel hispanos doesnt reflect my indigenous and african roots. The word Hispanic tends to fall towards the right...for example Kilgore's people have "Hispanics for Kilgore" I have always called myself Latino because of this sort of thing...the GOP hardly uses the word Latino..."to seperate and to categorize myself..I know...kind of puts me in box"...but politically I know for a fact the majority of progressive dems as myself that are of spanish speaking cultures especially here in Northern Virginia.. and that relates us more to being a Latino...it encompasses all of us. The word Hispanic not  only limits us and categorizes us only to the historical concept that we originated from "hispaniola--Spain" we are not!!! My brothers and sisters from the Carribean..and millions of Latin Americans...especially in Mexico and Central AMerica...perfer Latino.

According to many studies...and this is from  my studies in Sociology and etymolgy and research of the term...a more important distinction concerns the sociopolitical rift that has opened between Latino and Hispanic in American usage. For a certain segment of the Spanish-speaking population, Latino is a term of ethnic pride and Hispanic is more of label that borders on the offensive, truly offensive. According to this view, the word Hispanic lacks the authenticity and cultural resonance of Latino, with its Spanish sound and its ability to show the feminine form Latina when used of women. an even clearer reason why not to use ...Hispanic...is because the term was used by the U.S. Census Bureau during the time of Nixon...and other government agencies...this name just bears the stamp of an Anglo establishment far removed from the concerns of the Spanish-speaking community and our diverse culture---www.latinsociety.com Furthermore:
The Hispanic term is insulting, and it is the result of political agreements and the desire of some to be seen as pure, Spanish, as opposed to Latinoamericanos. On the celebration of the 500 years of the Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, the emphasis was placed on what Europe, and particularly Spain, had brought to the new continent, America (No, America is the whole continent, not just the country north of Mexico), while minimizing the huge cultural contributions, disregarding the history and forgetting the genocide that said "conquest" meant. I can explain more later...I hope you take this as more of a cultural learning tool...instead of a criticism.
