George Allen Opens Mouth, Inserts Foot

Last night Virginia's (not-so) great junior Senator, the (not-so) brilliant George Allen, prior to introducing the (not-so) triumphant Jerry Kilgore for his (not-s0) humble concession speech, declared that both Bill Bolling and Bob McDonnell had won their races.

Whoa, George, hold up there just a minute cowboy!

As of this morning, the margin between the Bob McDonnell and Creigh Deeds was less then 1%.  I watched the vote totals all day today, as the margin fluctuated from 1,900 votes to 2,100 and down to 1,400. As of 6:07 pm tonight, the margin was around 1,500 votes.

Currently outstanding are two districts in James City, which went narrowly for Tim Kaine yesterday.  Included is a group of absentee voters.

By the way, as we await the REAL results of this election, I think it's important to keep in mind that "Taliban Bob" McDonnell outraised Creigh Deeds by $4.6 million to $2.5 million, yet still couldn't manage more than a tie.  All that funny money, and McDonnell couldn't even buy a win?  That's amazing.  It's also an extremely impressive showing for Deeds, his staff, and all of his supporters.  Congratulations to all of them for running a great race, despite the financial disadvantage.

Meanwhile, Deeds has put together a team for a recount.  Deeds has the right to call for a recount if the margin of his loss is less than 1%.  Currently, the margin is 0.08%, much less than required.  Once results are certified later this month, the recount can begin.

For every person who supported Creigh Deeds - and for ever Virginian, for that matter -- I sure hopes he does request a recount.  We need to make sure that every vote is counted here in Virginia.  We need to make sure that each vote matters as much as any other.  We also need the pleasure of watching George Allen and Bob McDonnell eat their presumptuous, arrogant words!

Tony, you make some (Steve Nelson - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Tony, you make some good points. The way to fight them in 4 years is to keep track of Kaine's successes and failures and keep track of when Bolling/McDonnell agreed/disagreed with those successes and failures.

It is wishful thinki (Jonathan Mark - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
It is wishful thinking to say that Deeds is going to pick up 8000 votes in a recount.

I remember people saying this in Florida in 2000. In fact, I protested at W's first inauguration, waiving a sign that said "Count All Votes" with thousands of my closest friends.

The reality, however, is that the recount in Florida if it had proceeded would not even have picked up for Gore the 800 votes that he needed.

It defies belief that a magic 8000 votes that no one saw before are going to turn up.

And don't forget. We do not have paper trail voting machines in Fairfax County. A recount will simply give you the exact same number as the initial count.

Somehow this situation does not seem very promising for Deeds.

Oops, its a 1400 vot (Jonathan Mark - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Oops, its a 1400 vote difference, not 8000. Even so, it is all over but the shouting for Creighton.

Remember Ellen Sauerbrey, the Republican candidate for governor in Maryland? She insisted for years later that she had actually won, even after members of her own party were laughing at her.

Sometimes it is hard to let go.

Mike:  Actually, there was an initial mistake on that.  We fixed it.

Ron - I have my fingers crossed for a recount!!!! The right to a recount is included in state laws for JUST this reason!!!!

I myself wonder: if (Teddy - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
I myself wonder: if Deeds had received a little more help from the Party and the combined campaign, and a little more infusion of capital earlier, would we have this situation now? McDonnell's enormous money advantage (will we EVER know just who or what was so very generous to McD?) enabled him to fasten his negative campaign ads on the voters' minds before Creigh could muster the wherewithdal to respond. Once he did get a little more money, he started to turn the tide, but not soon enough, it looks like. This reflects rather poorly on the inattentive voters, who should have known better and recognized the McD sludge for what it was, and rejected it as they rejected Kilgore's negativism. I also rather doubt that in the case of Kilgore's negativism the voters would have reacted as strongly as they did if folks like RaisingKaine had not raised their consciousness level by attacking the attacker for his vile ads. Should we have done more to buffer Deeds?

James City is not a (Duh-oh - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
James City is not a town.  It is a county, and has been for a few hundred years.

Teddy - I agree - I (Jen Little - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Teddy - I agree - I wish not to say more, but I agree both Leslie and Creigh could have pulled it off.

McDonnell spent $2,0 (Easy, Teddy - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
McDonnell spent $2,000,000 to win the Republican primary.

Deeds spent $0 to win the (nonexistant) Democrat Primary.

Subtracting those numbers from the total raised, McDonnell had an advantage of about $100,000.

A money advantage it is, but "HUGE" it isn't.

Looks like ol' not s (CW - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Looks like ol' not so smart George Allen was right, you wishful thinker you.

Interesting CW, look (Nichole - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Interesting CW, looks to me like the vote count is now only a 1,323 margin.
49.99% to 49.92%

Wow, looks like less than 1% to me.

A recount will be coming.
No should be claiming victory yet.

Hehe... Who are the (Hans Mast - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Hehe... Who are the "(not-so) brilliant" people spouting "presumptuous, arrogant words" now? All the results are in and McDonnell is still the winner.

At 5:42 11/10 the difference is only 952!

I would like to know more about the irregularities with voting machines in Roanoke County?  What is up with that.  I suppose they are looking into it, but how easy is to tamper with the machines?

This is an interesting article on the problems with these machines.

949 at 6:21! (RickyD - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)

949 is interesting, (Jonathan Mark - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
949 is interesting, but it is a long way to -1. It all depends on whether there was another error the magnitude of the one in Henrico County.

The longer people look for these errors without finding them, the more likely that no further errors exist.

It may be that the easiest errors to identify get found first. The easiest errors to identify are the biggest ones, because the biggest ones are the most likely to produce anomalies.

Finding onesies and twosies here and there cannot help Creigh.

Teddy: The top two (Nichole - 4/4/2006 11:28:59 PM)
Teddy:
The top two for McD:
$1,258,500 Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) (Washington, DC)
AND
$252,609 Va Conservative Action PAC (Richmond, VA)

That says everything right there!!!
