Devolites Davis continues to misrepresent her record to voters Republican denies 2002 vote to establish a local income taxIn debate Tuesday, Davis claimed to have 'never supported a local income tax'; record shows otherwise
FAIRFAX - In a debate on Tuesday, State Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis denied her own 2002 vote to raise local income taxes.
"I'd have to ask Chap when I voted for a local income tax," Davis said in the debate Tuesday night with Democratic candidate Chap Petersen. "I have never, never supported a local income tax."
In 2002, Devolites Davis not only voted for - but enthusiastically "rounded up" votes for - a House amendment to establish a local income tax while she was the Republican Whip in the House Caucus. The amendment specifically authorized a local income tax in Northern Virginia, the Eighth Planning District.
Democrat Chap Petersen was the only Fairfax Delegate to vote against the bill.
"I'm working my darnedest to see what I can do," Devolites Davis told the Washington Post on February 23, 2002. The Post reported that Devolites Davis took the "lead role of rounding up votes for the income tax measure."Petersen campaign manager Joe Abbey said Devolites is continuing to run from her record.
"Jeannemarie has shown that she will do one thing in Richmond and say another thing to voters in Fairfax," Abbey said. "Jeannemarie should be honest with Fairfax residents about her history of fighting for a new local income tax."
