Mark Warner announces for U.S. Senate in an email at 9 AM.  Ben and I are scheduled to talk with the governor a little before noon; if anyone has any questions you'd like us to ask, please leave them in this thread and we'll do our best.  Thanks!

UPDATE:  Here's his email...

From: Gov. Mark R. Warner
Date: Sep 13, 2007 9:00 AM
Subject: Join Us In Our Effort
To: Friends of Mark Warner

Dear Friend,

Thirteen days ago, my friend, Senator John Warner announced his retirement from the US Senate. He has served Virginia and our country with distinction, and brought an independence and civility to office we need to see more of in public life.

After his announcement, I said that I would make my future plans public in the coming days. After a great deal of reflection, talking with my family and friends, I've reached my decision.

I hope you will watch my announcement video - and join us in this effort.

With best wishes,

Mark Warner

This is fantastic.

Congrats (Jeremiahthemessiah - 9/13/2007 9:26:29 AM)
He has a nice webpage, you guys are lucky to interview him, congratulations on that.

If anyone got the e-mail, put it up.

Could you post his web site address ? Thanks. (Tom Counts - 9/13/2007 9:42:30 AM)
Does Mark's web site have a tab for us to join his volunteer team ? I'd like to be ready to roll as a full time Warner volunteer immediately after the 2007 elections.

  T.C.

Yes (Jeremiahthemessiah - 9/13/2007 9:58:33 AM)
Yes he does (well, it's more "Join the Campaign" but I figure you are signing up for e-mails and you can probably go on to volunteer.

Questio for the Guv-hopefully-nee-Sen (Ron1 - 9/13/2007 9:32:17 AM)
Lowell,

I'd like you to ask Mark about how he thinks we bring sanity back to our foreign policy, and how he would see his role as a Senator in terms of bringing some accountability to those that have shown such contempt for our Constitution and our laws during the Bush administration (especially within the Department of Justice) and what he thinks his role is as a Senator in terms of checking the excesses of an out of control Executive, regardless of whether the inhabitor of that title is a D or an R.

Much thanks.

- Ron

Good question, thanks. (Lowell - 9/13/2007 10:03:33 AM)
n/t

yup (Matt Stoller - 9/13/2007 11:31:19 AM)
This is the essential question.  I hope Warner wins by a big margin, and I hope he's a great Senator for the sake of the country.  I'm a deep skeptic, as Lowell noted, and I hope he's changed his views on foreign policy matters.

End to Partisan Bickering (Brian Kirwin - 9/13/2007 9:53:58 AM)
Governor,

Since you say Virginians want "an end to partisan bickering" in your announcement video, why does your party disagree with you by funding negative partisan attack ads that have been mailed to Virginians these last few weeks.

Finally! (also I have a question) (mikeporter - 9/13/2007 9:56:05 AM)
So glad Mark Warner is now in the U.S. Senate race.

My Question: If elected Senator which Senate committees would you prefer be on and why?

I have a question for the bloggers (Jeremiahthemessiah - 9/13/2007 10:05:52 AM)
Do you have a copy of the e-mail Mark Warner sent out this morning?  Anyone?

Just wondering if I could see what it looked like.

question (Adam Malle - 9/13/2007 10:17:47 AM)
can you ask him to come to UVA-Wise and help jump start our efforts to form a sustainable yd club? :)

him running will energize us enough. let me know what the UVA-Wise Young Democrats can do to help.

join the campaign (pvogel - 9/13/2007 10:43:03 AM)
i joined at his website, and i expect lots of good things to do in 2008

I absolutely, positively couldn't be happier (jlmccreery - 9/13/2007 10:46:57 AM)
Mark Warner has made his decision, and I will back him all the way. George Bush flat out lied when he called himself a uniter instead of a divider. Warner has shown us how "United we stand" works and moves us forward. It a country and a world now so bitterly divided, we need people like Mark Warner in government.

On to Victory in '08!

what is your position on ending the iraq occupation? (lgb30856 - 9/13/2007 12:05:13 PM)
we don't need another "centrist" on this one.
Come on Mark, what is your stand.

Attacks begin (arlingtonblue - 9/13/2007 12:09:43 PM)
And the RNSC already has an anti-Warner site up and running:

Hey (legacyofmarshall - 9/14/2007 12:11:25 AM)
I watched that cute NRSC "I will not raise taxes" video...

My (and any other logical person's) first thought:

What was the end of Gov. Warner's sentence "I will not raise taxes..."  I'm sure he said something like "I will not raise taxes on the poorest 1/3 of Virginians" or something.  I'd like to see the whole video, not this NRSC clip.  Anyone know where to find it?

National Competitiveness Strategy (TurnVirginiaBlue - 9/13/2007 12:42:09 PM)
I have no idea what he means in details but that phrase is rare and is certainly true.  The United States has no economic, trade policy as well as others in the long term national interest and to keep the US #1 economically.

It generally refers to (Silence Dogood - 9/13/2007 1:07:56 PM)
How we transform our economy to compete in the global marketplace.  Bill Clinton referred to it as "the bridge to the 21st century."  Over the next 14 months, I expect we're going to hear a lot more details about Mark Warner's vision for what sort of economy we're going to be, both in terms of how Virginia will fit into the American economy and how America will fit into the global marketplace.  I'd venture to guess that two fundamental components of that plan (based on his messaging so far) will be investing in education and diversifying energy production to include greater use of alternative energies, and I'm incredibly excited to find out what other ideas he has.

People talk a lot about Mark Warner's political experience as Governor, but I think his experience as a businessman also shows that he's clearly a guy whose in touch with the direction business is going in America and in the world at large.  I think he's going to be an authoritative voice on economic matters during the 2008 election cycle.

no (TurnVirginiaBlue - 9/28/2007 4:23:03 PM)
sorry this sort of corporate driven adventure is not what I'm talking about.  Labor arbitrage, while that works great for special interests and corporate CEOs is not what I mean in terms of a real national strategy (as evidenced by our massive twin deficit and tanking dollar value).

I'd just like to note (legacyofmarshall - 9/13/2007 1:02:54 PM)
That in this video Gov. Warner is wearing a deep blue suit with a light blue shirt, and a baby blue tie with dark blue stripes.

What a thoroughly Democratic wardrobe, sir!

From the Hotline (Lowell - 9/13/2007 1:57:47 PM)
American Spectator reports: "Warner has seen public and some internal polling that indicates he is well ahead" of both Gilmore and Davis. "But Warner's advisers have also included in some of their polling a third name: Rep. Eric Cantor (R-07)." A Warner adviser: "Cantor does a bit better than either Gilmore of Davis in the southern part of the state. But Cantor isn't getting into this race"
