The television commercial is grim and gripping: A soldier who lost both legs in an explosion near Fallujah explains why he thinks U.S. forces need to stay in Iraq."They attacked us," he says as the screen turns to an image of the second hijacked airplane heading toward the smoking World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. "And they will again. They won't stop in Iraq."
Every investigation has shown that Iraq did not, in fact, have anything to do with the Sept. 11 attacks. But the ad, part of a new $15 million media blitz launched by an advocacy group allied with the White House, may be the most overt attempt during the current debate in Congress over the war to link the attacks with Iraq.
The article further explains that the ads are "[s]ponsored by a group of Bush allies under the name Freedom's Watch." According to Media Matters, Freedom's Watch is "headed by two former Bush administration officials -- Bradley Blakeman, a former senior assistant to Bush, and Ari Fleischer, Bush's former spokesman." Media Matters adds that "while President Bush and members of his administration have repeatedly linked Iraq and the 9-11 attacks, the 9-11 Commission found 'no evidence' that contacts between Iraq and Al Qaeda "developed into a collaborative operational relationship" before the Iraq invasion."
In other words, these ads continue the White House policy of linking 9/11 and the Iraq War, while denying that they are doing so. Sadly, many Americans have fallen for this "Big Lie." Fortunately, many others are well aware of what's going on here, and are not letting them get away with it yet again.
Seems to me moveon.org or a comgination of groups, maybe with financing from Soros and other groups funding Hillary so heavily (and other Democratic candidates for that matter) should get on the air in major markets immediately, raising these legitimate points. If the Bush White House is still lying about Iraq's being "linked" to 9-11, then how can we trust any other data, claims, or reports they issue now?
I feel like there needs to be some kind of vetting for ads by which clarity and attribution are enforced. Words like "They" should be updated to "al Qaeda." Splitting this into "us" and "them" only enforces the clash of civilizations meme, and that's badd.
