Volkswagen Coming to Virginia

This is bad news for Michigan, good news for Virginia:

Volkswagen of America plans to announce today that it will move its headquarters to Herndon, as part of a new corporate strategy to for revamping its sagging auto business.

The company said it would bring 400 jobs to the region and invest more than $100 million to set up operations in a new office building in Woodland Park near Washington Dulles International Airport.

According to the Post article, Gov. Kaine "authorized incentives worth $6 million to lure Volkswagen, including a $1.5 million cash payment in the next year and $4.5 million over five years beginning in 2011."  Volkswagen cited northern Virginia's "high-quality schools, skilled workforce and proximity to the airport" among its reasons to move.

There was no mention by VW of the Metro to Dulles project, coming in 2020 2030 2100...god knows when.  There was also no mention of getting stuck in NOVA gridlock, any time of day, in their employees' shiny Volkswagens.

P.S.  In other news, Dave Albo, Tom Rust, and other Republicnsn reportedly welcomed the move, saying something to the effect of "Excellent, more abuser fees for us...bwahahahahahahahah!!!"  *snark*

of course- a right to work for less state. Probably won't have to worry about joining a union since VA is so weak on labor issues.

Good point. (Lowell - 9/6/2007 8:13:49 AM)

Just HQ, not manufacturing... (ericy - 9/6/2007 8:15:00 AM)

So unions are largely a non-issue.

didn't catch that. Thanks. Although unions are not just blue collar anymore. but it is a non issue here.

reverse outsourcing, wonderful for a change (JScott - 9/6/2007 12:10:55 PM)
It really gets me when leaders in office spin things like this. Of course its good for Virginia, as BMW was good for SC, and Toyota is good for about three states, but its funny how they are quick to condem it when our companies do the same and outsource jobs to other parts of the world. Seems very hypocritical to me. If your against outsourcing on principle would not be against this move by VW? Just saying.

That is a Good Point (Matt H - 9/6/2007 9:14:45 AM)
I'm wondering if this move will affect its manufacturing facilities (if they even have any still in the U.S.).  Last I heard they moved their US production to Mexico.

BTW, the Teamsters are not against VW and they move their cars from the docks in Baltimore.

Welcome Stephan (Bubby - 9/6/2007 9:31:38 AM)
Congratulations, Volkswagen lost almost as much money in the US last year as Ford motors $850 Million ! - looks like you guys are getting the swing of "failed management".  I was ready to buy one of your diesels this year...but you blew it and couldn't even deliver one to the US market - how did that happen? I was disappointed to hear that you are retaining your marketing and design team - they suck.

Since no one at HQ is returning my calls anymore, let me just say - your cars look like they were designed by my nephew.  He's 14.  He doesn't buy cars.  But if he did they would look like the swoopy boxes he sees in Japanese anime.

I buy cars. I have a weakness for molded fuselages - the 72 Plymouth Fury, Audi A6, and the old Passat please me. Of course your cars are beautifully engineered, and feature filled, but they now look like a cheap Hyundai!.  No, I take that back, Hyundais are prettier, and a better value.  So please, fire the design guy who put all that chrome on the front of your cars, lose the creases and build me a fine German car that pleases my hillbilly yearning for a sensible car that looks like it was chiseled from a solid block of Bavarian gneiss.  If I wanted a Japanese car, I'd buy one...which is what may happen when Honda rolls out its new diesel Accord.

Wow (Doug in Mount Vernon - 9/6/2007 1:17:26 PM)
Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or what?

I love my '99 VW Passat.  It's a great, well-built, sturdy, and well-performing passenger car.  I have had very few problems with it.  It's got 150K+ and purring like a champ.

I won't get rid of it until it loses an axel.  But when I do, if VW has a hybrid super-efficient model available, I will certainly be buying another VW.  Otherwise, it's likely to be a Toyota Prius or other high-mileage hybrid for me...

Schweigen! (Bubby - 9/6/2007 3:12:56 PM)
VW will never build a hybrid car, they violate the German sense of propriety.  Go ask the Toyota dealer how long the Prius battery pack lasts, and how much it costs. You'll be buying new batteries if you keep it as long as you've had the Passat.

VW believes in the clean diesel, and they build them. The VW Polo TDI gets 70 mpg. How they were unable to get them permitted for the US is a story I'm still looking into.

And...I'm currently a VW owner. n/t (Bubby - 9/6/2007 3:15:48 PM)

Fine, we'll take VW HQ, but... (phriendlyjaime - 9/6/2007 10:05:21 AM)
Michigan football fans need to stay in Michigan.  We only have room for more tOSU fans, in my opinion.

VW Comes to Dulles Airport (veryblue - 9/6/2007 10:15:06 AM)
Have you noticed that VW employees will NOT have to use our clogged roads?  Nice to have the salaries.

A Washinton Post article said they moved there because of the high level of education, large number of people with high tech backgrounds and closeness to airport.

What does that tell you? Lots of smart, tech-savvy Virginias who can't make their own government work for them to build *&%$#* roads!!!

Win/Loss (Evan M - 9/6/2007 10:30:33 AM)
I agree, this is a great win for Virginia and for Fairfax. I just wish the Loudoun County Economic Development Committee had been more on the ball in making a play for this business. Lindsay VW is just over the border from Herndon in Sterling, and there are a few empty buildings on 28 which could have used this kind of occupancy.

Still, I love my Jetta and am glad VW will be in VA.
