Bush Makes Surprise Visit to Iraq

I was at home this afternoon with the weary task of labeling school supplies and learned from CNN that President Bush and Secretary Rice among others have made a surprise visit to Iraq en route to Australia.  They are there right now.  Of course they didn't go to Bagdad where it is oh so dangerous, they went to one of the outlying provinces where Bush says progress is being made.... According to news reports Bush now says if we can make similar progress elsewhere he'll let the troops start coming home.  In other words, he's trying to define an exit strategy that will leave us there forever if we cannot win militarily.  IF WE MAKE PROGRESS  the troops can start coming home.  The corollary to this is, of course, if he cannot make the limited success he claims to have had in a very limited geographic area spread elsewhere, they'll have to keep on fighting a war that cannot be won militarily with no end in sight.

This is exactly the opposite of the Congressional mandate that we must show significant progress to justify staying, and is the most immoral spin I can imagine to put on his failed policy.

Aim Low! (Matt H - 9/4/2007 3:28:23 PM)
I couldn't agree with you more and it's all about keeping expectations low (a lot like Bush's grades in college, and his entire spoiled life this far).  So much for the days of fighting Nazi's, shooting for the moon, or heck, even beating the Russians in hockey.

Unfortunately, his tactics are brilliant.  The press (and most of the politicians in office) will be too timid to report on the facts or reality.  If it looks like some meager progress is being made, they'll pretend it's a victory and will continue to give Bush his blank check with respect to both our tax dollars and more importantly, our kids' blood.  It's absolutely crazy, but we are nothing more than plain fools in the end.
