We're kicking ass and taking names on Raising Kaine, and in order to keep doing that, we need to self-manage the site. Lowell is an amazing guy, with way too much time on his hands, but realistically, with his new gig and all, he can't keep RK in line on his own forever.
Thus, I'm asking my colleagues and friends on RK to take a few seconds (literally, it's a single point-and-click) out of their RK browsing to use the Rating and Recommend features available. They're both ridiculously easy, so easy even a Republican could do it. (see, and right there, that's an example of a comment that might be rated "marginal.") Rating is the little drop-down box next to each comment. Recommending is on the Right-hand column next to each diary. Of course, you need to be a registered user to do either.
Why should you do this? Well, for two reasons. First, it helps manage the growth and success of ths site. If more people rate and recommend, the site becomes more useful and more interactive. Basic website theory dictates that interactivity drives success, so click and rate. Second, right now, I would suspect that Lowell does something like 80% of the rating and recommending himself. That's perfectly fine, it's his site, and more power to him. However, I would suspect that the future of RK as "Lowell's site" is not the future of RK that would serve "the progressive Virginia blogopshere" best. Just like RK became more than "a place to promote Tim Kaine for governor," it needs to be able to sustain its success if and when Lowell takes on bigger and better jobs.
Just like Kos, I suspect Lowell wants to eventually be on Meet The Press (okay, gratuitous attempt to drive traffic to my own blog, so sue me) saying "I'm just a guy who started a website."
See, that's our strength. We don't think any of this is our own doing, per se. We just discovered a new way to harness the inherent and pre-existing activism and goodwill of the citizenry.
But it only works if we do our teensy-weensy part.
So click on "recommend" when you read a diary you like, rate the comments you read. In the long run (say, October 2007) it will make a difference in making RK a site of good informatina nd commentary for folks asking "who the hell am I voting for on November 6th again?"
