"Nothing's Working": Republican Rule in the Bush Years

Today's Washington Post has an article on Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's relationship with President Bush. It reveals mistake after mistake by Rice, such as when she assured Bush in May 2005 that Iraq was "going to be a great country." Or when she "made a decision that she would side with the president to build her intimacy with the president." Or when she predicted that Hamas and Hezbollah were "extremists" who "would not do very well" in their respective countries.
Essentially, the Post article indicates that the Bush foreign policy team under Rice has failed at nearly everything it has touched:
"These are scary times we live in," a senior Rice aide said last year. "Nothing's working. We can blame Iran, we can blame North Korea, and we can blame Hezbollah. You can blame them all because they are all terrible people. But at some point you have to ask yourself, are you going about this right?"
"Nothing's working" is an excellent, accurate summation not just of foreign policy, but of Republican rule during the Bush years. From budget deficits to Hurricane Katrina to the "culture of corruption" to sneering contempt for our Constitution to crumbling infrastructure to "lots of children left behind" to shocking moral hypocrisy to infringement on our civil liberties in the name of "security" to Valerie Plame to our "oil addiction" to complete lack of progress on immigration to...well, you get the picture.
The bottom line is that "nothing's working" applies perfectly to Republican rule nationally. It also applies perfectly to Republican rule here in Virginia. From marriage amendments that accomplish nothing to abuser fees that are hated to delivering for big corporate donors on issue after issue to dividing Virginians and stirring up anger, Republicans have proven that they are utterly incapable of governing. Not that this should be a surprise from a party that despises the government, thinks raising revenues in a non-sneaky way is evil, and believes that we should move Virginia backwards not forwards.
The answer? Democrats aren't perfect, but at least with them we have a hope that something might work for a change. And at least they stand a chance of "going about this right." With Republicans, there's no chance at all. Please vote Democratic on November 6.

Republicans hate government so much (mosquitopest - 9/3/2007 8:21:36 AM)
that they are willing to break it and destroy it. Republicans can never manage a government that strives to do its duty and meet the needs of its people....
buzz...buzz...
I forgot to add.... (mosquitopest - 9/3/2007 8:25:13 AM)
And the Republicans and their friends GET RICH when they do this....if they have their way our entire government will be privatized and answerable to no one but it's owners/masters....

Part of how they get rich is... (Lowell - 9/3/2007 8:29:00 AM)
...hiring and exploiting illegal immigrants. When you hear Republicans get all riled up (supposedly) about illegal immigration, keep in mind that they are by far the largest recipients of contributions from companies -- and their subcontractors -- who employ illegals. No wonder why they're screaming so loud, comparing illegal immigrants to child molesters and joking about concentration camps. To paraphrase Jim Webb in another context, that's because "they've got nothing to report."
Funny saying about failed relationships (Eric - 9/3/2007 8:39:27 AM)
Although it's a different context it applies very well here...
The only common element in all your failed relationships is you.
They can blame anything and everything, but the only thing that's been a constant throughout has been the Dubya Administration. It's clear who the problem is.
Ironically, Republicans claim to be all about (Lowell - 9/3/2007 8:40:39 AM)
personal responsibility. Yet they take ZERO personal responsibility for their massive and repeated failures mismanaging the government, our state, and our nation. What part of "responsibility" don't Republicans understand?
Good comment Lowell.... (Dianne - 9/3/2007 2:38:53 PM)
and a good comment for the Democratic campaign trail. It could be tied to so very many things which the voters would understand.
Name one agency under Bush Rule (vadem - 9/3/2007 8:57:20 PM)
that has been effective and provided a useful service. We tried this exercise recently when a group of us were sitting around talking about the various problems. No one could name ONE department or agency in this mis-administration that functioned well, let alone averted calamity.

A better subject line (tx2vadem - 9/3/2007 11:08:57 AM)
would have been: a motivational poster for the Oval Office.
Great Poster ! (norman swingvoter - 9/3/2007 11:25:16 AM)
Love it. bush is always talking about what people will say in 50 years about his legacy. This is it.
