According to Governor Kaine, as reported by the Martinsville Bulletin, "Former Gov. Mark Warner is expected to announce within two weeks that he 'is getting back into state politics in a major way.'"  According to the story, Kaine "would not elaborate on whether Mark Warner will announce he is running for the Senate seat or a second term as governor."  Stay tuned.

I knew Warner would run (mikeporter - 9/2/2007 10:52:47 AM)
I can't wait till the announcement.  Where can I get a Warner 2008 bumper sticker? ;)

Senate, Please (K - 9/2/2007 1:38:25 PM)
It's hard to imagine anything more telling of a new day in America than seeing Virginia with not ONE but TWO Democratic senators!

If that wouldn't tell America the GOP's done for, I can't imagine what would.

(Plus, I happen to think Mark Warner would be a standout senator!)

I agree (Chris Guy - 9/2/2007 3:11:58 PM)
but state politics sounds like Governor to me.

I hope not, I can't deal with a Sen. Davis.

How about Sen. Gilmore? (Lowell - 9/2/2007 4:16:10 PM)
I have a feeling Gilmore would win the nomination, and Ben's analysis appears to be confirming that.

Let Gilmore run (Evan M - 9/2/2007 4:33:57 PM)
We have plenty of ways to beat him.

"Jim Gilmore couldn't make it as a Presidential candidate, Virginia was his second choice."

"Jim Gilmore, because we need to put fiscal irresponsibility in the Senate."

"Jim Gilmore, didn't quite kill the car tax, won't quite bring our troops home from Iraq."

"Jim Gilmore, because Tom Davis wasn't crazy enough for Virginia's Republicans."

This is fun!

Beating Gilmore (libra - 9/2/2007 6:43:16 PM)
That's the stick to beat Gilmore with. Where's the carrot to bring the voters to our side, instead of saying "pox on both your houses" and staying home? With Mark Warner, it would be easy; he'd be a very sweet carrot, not only for Dems, but for Independents and even moderate Repubs...

Carrots (Evan M - 9/2/2007 10:05:18 PM)
Agreed, we also need a carrot, but that needs to be figured out once we know who is running on our side. The case for the Democratic nominee needs to be based on the Democratic nominee.

Personally, I think the baseline carrot is that Virginia has been run, and represented, best by Democrats.

I have a feeling (Chris Guy - 9/2/2007 7:11:41 PM)
that Gilmore will not be Davis' only opposition in this race. Just cause conservatives don't like Tom Davis doesn't mean they're delusional enough look to Jim Gilmore as their savior.

Gilmour beats Davis in 2-way race, (teacherken - 9/2/2007 8:59:25 PM)
primary or caucuses.

But in a 3-way or more primary, don't bet against Davis winning.

When will Repubs decide if primary or caucus?  And how might Hager lean on such an issue?

Hager (Evan M - 9/2/2007 10:09:25 PM)
Hager scares me a little, because that is a smart man looking out for the long-term future of his Party.

We Virginia Democrats need to be careful not to get too cocky. Just as we jump on the mistakes made by the RPVA, Hager will be fast to jump on any missteps we make.
