NLS analyzes Gilmore vs. Davis, but what if the repub Powers That Be, realizing Davis is too liberal (ha!) for the "rest of Virginia" (also known as the real Virginia), and Gilmore is too much a laughing stock, what if, they turn to George Allen... he is less a laughing stock than Gilmore, and did garner a hefty vote count when he lost the recent Senatorial race. I'll bet he would be delighted to answer the call to serve.
