New Poll on Metro to Dulles: 81% Want a Tunnel

A new poll conducted for the John Foust campaign in the Dranesville district of Fairfax County has some interesting results on the Tysons tunnel issue. According to the poll, 81% of voters believe that Metro to Dulles Airport should include a tunnel in Tysons Corner, with just 12% opposed. Even better, 69% strongly support a tunnel, compared to just 15% who support an elevated rail option. The most intense opposition to elevated rail in Tysons comes from McLean (70% oppose), from Republicans (69% oppose), and from women (64% oppose).
By the way, I don't know of any major reasons why the Dranesville poll results wouldn't apply to surrounding districts. Seriously, why would anyone who has thought about this, and who isn't a shareholder or officer of Bechtel, want an above-ground rail slicing through Tysons Corner? :)

SNAFU - That's why! It's the NOVA way. (MohawkOV1D - 8/30/2007 3:31:40 PM)
Hard to believe that this is the best that we could do.
Building owners are already giving end of lease notices to occupants. If you own a building in the path of the METRO extension to HELL, then you are in the $$$$$$. However, if a tunnel were to be built, these people would make ZIP-SNIT.
Charles E. Smith, you're my HERO.
And if you're over budget, in 1994 dollars, we'll withdraw federal funding. This thing is going to be (already is)a fiasco.

I hate and despise each and every NOVA/Fairfax developer and their finger puppets on the FFX County Board.

Lowell, you ask an interesting question as to why would anyone who has a tought about this and who isn't a shareholder or officer of Bechtel, want an above ground rail slicing through Tysons Corner?
Maybe Connolly can answer that question. Isn't he a shareholder in SAIC? Doesn't SAIC have a station at its feet? Hmmmm!
If anyone knows the answer, would love to see a posting!
Google SAIC and Bechtel (HerbE - 8/30/2007 11:15:06 PM)
Additional big money in this project would appear to be more than just the value added to property for those who own land near the stations. For $5 Billion, it's there for those who are poised to provide engineering and technical support for the construction, as well as the construction itself.
So, I Googled SAIC and Bechtel. Interestingly enough, they have a long standing/ready made partnership in the Yucca Mountain Nuclear storage facility. Just as the rail construction project will be sole sourced, as has the prelim engineering, the supporting contacts may be sole sourced as well.
If you want complete buy-in, Bechtel should spread the money around. Make the maximum number of stockholders "happy". I believe that stock prices will increase for many publicly traded companies with the signing of the full funding grant agreement with the Feds. I wouldn't be surprised that a few bonuses will, too.
Hopefully, the Feds are still stinging from the Boston Big Dig and Halliburton contracts to recognize a bad deal. Can the Fairfax public see the parallels?
Sure, we may want rail, but at any cost? Remember, it's only the Fairfax public who doesn't have their costs capped for the project. This first segment to Wiehle has gone from $1.4B to $3B and it hasn't even gone through a final bid process.
I support the tunnel idea if there was a way (jiacinto - 8/30/2007 8:55:28 PM)
to do it without losing federal funding. But apparently there isn't. As the media seem to indicate that this project is going to die anyway, which would be a disaster, it is all academic now. I'd like the idea of a tunnel. FTA rules, however, seem to have made it impossible.
I suggest (MohawkOV1D - 8/30/2007 11:39:01 PM)
horse drawn Trolleys. A little bit of NOLA right here in NOVA. It's the new American way.
I suggest (changeagent - 8/31/2007 1:08:41 AM)
No the new American way is to tell the public that congestion will be relieved and there will not be any cost over runs. The Toll users will provide $925 million or 37%. TOLLS NOT CAPPED.
Can't get a straight answer from the county officials, but heard Fx Cty residents will be responsible for cost overruns.
